I have a 6 month old pitbull I will be making the drive from cali to missouri with him I heard you could give them benadryl to keep them calm and help with car sickness. Has anyone heard of this method, also anyone have any suggestions to make the drive as easy as possible for him.

i dont know about the benadryl. but i have heard alot of car sickness is not so much motion sickness but anxiety based. From the first time i drove thor home he got car sick. he hated the car. I was told that the anxiety stems from being taken away from the mother and littermates for the first time with a new person. The anxiety returns each time they get in the car and then bam, theyre sick. I looked up some info online and this is what ive been doing...Get your dog used to taking short car trips. get him out in a spot he maybe familiar with and play with him and reward him and just give him affection. keep doing this for a little while and make the trips longer with little stops along the way. this way he will equate the car ride with something positive. Obviously car sickness dosent happen to everydog and not all of its anxiety based. but this worked for my dog and he no longer gets car sick. he just sticks his head out the window or lays down and chills.

What I did was take her for a ride somewhere everyday. She been fine ever since. She has not gotten car sick yet, knock on wood. In fact, she loves the truck, she even rides in my friends cars with no problem. she just wants to hang her head out the window. She was probably used to vehicles by then, she rode from Terrell to Dallas in the back of a truck then rode home with me, so she's been straight. Now if I could ust get her to stop chewing on my caps when I run in the gas station!

I have traveled cross country a few times with my dogs and they always do great. Just make sure you let them stop and stretch their legs often. Its pretty easy in the middle of nowhere to find some room. Get a long lead or rope and run around and play along the way, you will need the exercise to!
I let Pike off leash on a walk in the badlands once...and he chased antelope and was gone from our camp site for hours. Ill never make that mistake again! |

Use Dramamine (Sp?) I spoke to my Vet yesterday about a puppy that I shipped off to WY this morning who would get car sick, and he said to give him 1 tablet of the Original Dramamine and it should take care of everything. Bendryl is fine for dogs, but it's not gonna help with an upset stomach or motion sickness. So don't get the Non-Drowsy formula, get the Original Dramamine and everything should be gravy. You give one every 6-8 hours I believe.

I heard Drammamine works too. He is very comfortable being in the car. He loves sitting in the front seat. I dont let him stick his head out of the window though, I am scared I will have to slam on the brakes and he will get hurt.
I am more concerned about the length of time he will be couped up in the car. I dont want him to get stressed out or sick. I think making more stops will work, since he is a very active puppy. Any other tips on traveling with my 6 months old pit would be great. |

Dramamine is fine to give him, Benadryl may help him to sleep most of the way. Both my block heads love to ride in the car, and Mollie insists on looking at every single person in every single car/truck we pass.... stares them down actually, kinda embarrassing.

I would suggest that you spend some time out of the car before you try to feed your dog to . It takes my boy a little while of running around to really want to eat when on the road. Everything is mixed up and different and sometimes he skips meals the first day or so. If you get some exercise in, then hang out and rest a little before you offer some food it may make him more interested in eating. One of my dogs didnt eat for 3 days on his first trip and I realized I need to slow down and let him adjust to a spot before he was comfortable eating. Take it slow and have fun with your dog. It will be awesome if you do!
