2. Know that your pit bull will most likely turn DA when it matures.
3. KNOW YOUR LOCAL LAWS!!! They won't openly update to the general public, so check periodically.

5. Know emergency treatment procedures for common mishaps. This, IMO, is something all dog owners should know.

6. That this breed does not need doggy playmates, but human attention and compasion instead. The breed thrives upon interaction and needs plenty of it as well as excecise.

7. 90% of the time the animal needs to be spayed or neutered for various reasons....

8. Proper containment.....(cables and ropes will not work) Kennels are easy to dig under and escape as well "climbing" out of. Wal-mart collars are bad news.
Heavy duty (not tow truck crap) hardware is best....
If chaining....bullsnaps should be last resort. Burried axles are best for stakes...
at least 10 ft length is common and appropriate for good excercise and room to play and run.

9. Crate training should be a must for inside APBT's, especially with multiple dogs in house.

10. If you want another APBT, find your local shelter as they have many that need a noce home before they are PTS. Population is already overwhelming, without adding more to it.

11. Because they are pretty, or cute or have a neat color, or are so sweet, or are just the right size, or because they make the best puppies, or because all of our friends and family want one IS NEVER A REASON TO BREED ANY DOG...

12. Know the fact behind bite statistics in the United States. Be educated enough so that you can help educate others as to where the real problems stem from.

13. Another one on education: Before you even adopt a Pit Bull, know that people will treat you poorly because of your dog's breed. Be sure you can handle it. They will cross the street and whisper amongst themselves how horrible you are... even when your dog is 10 times better behaved than their aggressive cocker spaniel. are you ready to prove them wrong??? Every encounter is a chance to educate those who are uninformed. But it does get frustrating and isn't for everyone...

14. Socialization, socialization, socialization -- From the moment he or she is born or enters your home socialize that dog with every creature and situation under the sun (and be prepared for the fact that it may not work...)

I have an old copy from a news special called West 57th Street. It's something like 60 minutes. Years ago, they did a special on Pit Bulls. I thought it was very good because they told the good and the bad. If I have someone interested in adopting a dog who has no Pit Bull experience, I make them watch it.

They interview vets, animal control, the mailman, and all kinds of people who actually defend the breed. It also shows attacks on children and what the breed is capeable of in the wrong hands.

I dont worry about any of my dogs mauling a child but I dont let toddlers around some of them. The reason is because the dogs are capeable of hurting a young child just smacking them with their tail or unintentionally pushing them into a wall. I think some times people forget how powerful the dogs are and sometimes the dogs themselves seem to forget.

15. I would tell any prospective owners to remember that even though Bully Breeds have a high tolerance for physical pain, they are very emotional and need to be loved by someone with a lot of patience. These dogs have their hearts break very, VERY easily.

1. Research the breed indepth. Research, research and more research.
2. Know the capabilities and the expectations of being a Bully owner.
3. Get proper obedience training.
4. Don't be stupid and think you have a macho dog. Some people are proud they have a "bad" dog. This is stupid.
5. Be a responsible owner. If you do not plan to breed your dog(there are so many Pit Bulls in the shelters), get your dog altered, neutered or spayed. The shelters are already full .
6. Never beat your dog into submission. That is a bad Bully owner.
7. Respect your dog. You are the Alpha dog, but don't disrespect or break him.
8. Most of all, Love your dog.
9. This dog will take time and exercise.
10. Any dog takes dedication. What you put into your dog is what you get.

Understanding that when you go away on vacation or for work, that not everyone is qualified to take care of your dogs. Always plan ahead, always find a responsible person to step in when you cannot.

Training is the most important thing you can do for your dog. If you do not have the time or energy to train a pit bull in the basics (at the very least), do not get one.

Pit bulls are NOT GUARD DOGS. Human aggression should NOT be reinforced, or tolerated, only managed. If you want a guard dog, get an alarm system.

Make sure all your I's are dotted and T's are crossed.

Chances are animal control will visit your house at least once, be prepared. All shots UTD and licensed and know where your proof is. Don't give them a reason to take your dogs!

break up a fight? i guess i have been fortunate because i had dogs all of my life, mix breeds, two cockers spaniels, one time 4 dogs and a cat, they all got along. now i have 3 pit bulls and another cat, which was older never around dogs ever. my 3 pits welcome this cat in our home, and now they sleep side by side. if they do fight, i heard throw water on them. I am lucky my dogs all love each other and i found out pits are like pack dogs, lay on top of each other and boy they love to smile.

i never own a pit until 7 years ago but own others, but mine are fine, one is a little of a leader but i have children, babies, and even recently my daughters friend New Born, they went and smelled her, look at her and actually Jazz my big fool licked her little hands. no one is afraid of my pits, they are great dogs, i will never own another breed. there is good and bad in every breed, you will get some pits become mean, but so does labs, german shepards, rottie, cockers, and the smallest breed. it depends what in there souls and the owner. either could fail
