Default Upsetting Story
So one day i was at work, and this guy came up and asked me if i knew what kind of dog he had. I asked him where is got it and he said "I found him." I told him that i thought it definitely looked like a pit bull mix. I then told him i was going to scan the dog for a microchip. I scanned the dog and a number came up, i told him i was going to call the number so that hopefully I could contact the owners information. He cut me off and told me to not bother, even if i found the owner, he was not going to give the dog back. He wanted to keep it. I just stared at him in disbelief. WOW. So then he asked me where he could go to get the ears cropped, I told him the dog was too old to get that done. He asked about vaccines, I told him an idea of prices, and he said "well its obvious someone took care of this dog, hes well groomed, he is not skinny and his balls have been chopped off, he probably has all his vaccines right?" I told him, there is no way to tell this, and he should still have the dog receive vet care, he decided against it and left. I was pissed.

Did you get his information?
I thought legally you had to contact and report the dog as being found. If it had a chip especially.. thats how people have piece of mind that if their dog is ever stolen it will be returned.
I hope you were able to at least get enough information on him and inform his microchip registry...

he wouldn't give me any information. i tried to get down some info and tried to tell him we would send him coupons but he said 'thats okay' and left. by the time the cops came, he would have already been gone. he was on to my plan.

I would have still reported it. Where do you work and do they have
camera's? I would have still called the id number and let them know someone came in with their dog....

I would call the number because if the dog ran away, the owners might be frantic looking for their dog. Even though you don't have the dog, the owners will be relieved to know that their dog is alive and not harmed.

Yes, legally you need to report it.

You should have gone to the parking lot to get his license plate number.

Wow, I'd hate to be in that situation. Maybe a good reason, for future reference, to get at least some info, copy of DL number and such, before offering any assistance.

Why would your job not support you?

Well.. I would, at the very least, call the microchip company to find out if the chip was registered with an owner. We get strays quite frequently that have a chip (YAY) but the owner never registered it, so it points back at some shelter (DANG IT!!). If the chip goes back to an owner, I would report your exchange with the guy about the dog and your location. People don't go far for something like checking for a microchip. I would expect that low-life to be close by.

BTW.. luckily, the dog was neutered. We had some chick bring in an un-neutered Dachshund that didn't, unfortunately, have a chip. The chick said: well, good, then I am going to breed him.. he is obviously pure bred.

GAG!

If I found someone's wallet with $1,000 and a DL and didn't return it it would still be called theft. To have property that belongs to someone else and not return it is theft. Also you don't know if the dog hadn't been stolen unless you talk to the original owners. The fact that the dog had been cared for before this guy found it means that someone cared for the dog and probably are really missing it. I'd at least give the owners a call.

Recently when I took Molly to the vet a guy was in there looking for his JRT. It had gotten out of the yard and disappeared. It had a tag with his address and phone number on it. A week later someone called him asking if he had lost his dog. He told them yes and never heard from them again. He was going around to all the vets in the area and posting a notice on the bulletin board in hope that whoever found the dog would take it to a local vet.

THIS IS THE PURPOSE OF MICROCHIPPING!!!!!!!!!!! Don't wait one more minute, get on the damn phone and report it! I don't give a rat's ass if your boss supports your decision or not. You went far enough to scan the dog, now follow through. I don't care if you don't have any info, but you can at least let them know what area the dog may be in. Please stop sitting back and washing your hands of the situation.

Agreed. I would still report it. Even if nothing positive comes of it, you've done the right thing and have that piece of mind.

x3. Seriously. That dog needs to be allowed to reunite with the family if that's the case.
