I use those attachments for the hose. you can set it to whatever ratio you want 10/1 , 30/1 and spray down the yard. It keeps everything nice and clean.

for flies you can use these. they work great

I picked up some of the Bronco Gold, and it does work. Fleas don't like it much either.

I dont have a dog yard, but I do have fosters coming and going a lot so we always risk contamination from dogs straight out of the shelter.

I use SimpleGreen once a week on the deck and gravel area (its a concentrate in a spray bottle) and then hose everything off.

When a new dog comes or gets sick, then I get out the bleach.

I've started bleaching everything about once every three days since the damn flies have gotten so bad. But I had someone tell me that they put a cap full of bleach in their dog's water each day?....Anyone ever heard of this? It sounds to me like a way out of cleaning bowls and giving fresh water but I wanted to see if any of you do it.

Chlorox anywhere spray works great. I used it on the dogs indoor crates, bowls, even cleaning my gecko cages.

IN as in directly in the drinking water? Or am I misreading that?

actually nothing wrong with putting a cap full of bleach in the water, for outside yard dogs

Bleach kills parasites

A cap full of plain bleach (Do not use scent bleach) in your dog water bowl.
It prevent fles,and other flying insects from laying eggs in your dog water
bowl. For your dog to drink help reducing some Internal Parasites

Unscented household bleach with 5% chlorine can sometimes be a good disinfectant. For example, this may work when the water is not heavily polluted, or when Giardia or cryptosporidiosis are not a concern.
Bleach does not work well in killing off Giardia or beaver fever or Cryptosporidium parasites. The amount of bleach needed to kill these parasites makes the water almost impossible to drink. If Cryptosporidium or Giardia are in your water, boiling is the best way to ensure safe drinking water.

Disinfection using bleach works best with warm water. Add 1 drop (0.05 mL) of bleach to 1 Litre of water, shake and allow to stand for at least 30 minutes before drinking. Double the amount of bleach for cloudy water or for cooler water. A slight chlorine odour should still be noticeable at the end of the 30-minute waiting period if you have added enough bleach. The longer the water is left to stand after adding bleach, the more effective the disinfection process will be.

no problem. The info is great. IMO, a capful of bleach every day, I dont know, I would be afraid in time, there might be problems.....couldnt that rot out the dog's stomach after awhile? Bleach is some strong stuff.

no if you read the links, and the charts provided in the links, adding household (5%) bleach at the proper amounts will produce water with about 2 parts per million of chlorine in it (about 0.0002 percent).

there is chlorine in tap water as it is.

I don't personally add bleach to my dogs water but after reading this thread I took the time to research it, and it is food for thought.

Whether it's bad for the dog or not, it would seem unneccesary if water was changed every day. If one could not even do that i would wonder about the kind of care and human interaction their dogs were getting.

I try to use bleach as little as poossible for environmental reasons, but I do keep a bottle around for the big jobs. If my dog lived in a kennel I would probably use bleach once in awhile, but good old soap and elbow grease most of the time.

To help control flies I would use cedar chips and eucalyptus / bergamot oil sachets. (essential oils you can find in the health food store).

For general cleaning / home disinfectant I find that hydrogen peroxide (the main component of Oxyclean but a tiny fraction of the price) seems to do just as well as bleach.

I make a home all purpose didinfectant/cleaning spray that works great. White vinegar and tea tree oil are the active ingredients. I also add grapefruit oil for a pleasant scent. If anyone wants the recipe I'll dig it up.

The links are good info ... I just want to point out that both are intended in general for "emergency preparedness" situations.

"When should I disinfect my drinking water?
You should disinfect your drinking water if:

Your community has been issued a boil water advisory;
You are using water directly from a stream, lake or shallow well;
Lab tests of your water show that it contains "fecal coliforms";
A flood, earthquake or other disaster has disrupted your community water supply;
You are traveling in an area where water is not well treated; or
You have a weakened immune system, in which case you should disinfect all of your drinking water."

like I said in my first post. This is primarily of use to people with a large yard of dogs.

the bleach isn't used because you neglect your dog or because you don't change the water or keep it in inhumane conditions. \

it is used to keep insects from laying eggs in the water and your dog ingesting them. which as you know only takes seconds, which could be in between the times you change the water.

I appreciate and respect the differing opinions, but at the same time there is more than one way to look at a painting.

what works for you may not work for someone else and vice versa.

keep that in mind.

I just used the links to show the correct ratio to disinfect the water using bleach. The site is also for humans, not dogs.... don't really see how that is valid.

don't need to get in a back and forth with someone.

do as you....

have a good one.

Do you talk to people that way in "real life?" Holy cow ...

Keep THIS in mind: I have every right to state my opinion too even though you might not agree.

I know there are people here with "large yards" of dogs. Rescue operations excluded, my very personal feeling about large yards of dogs is one of general distaste, no matter how good of care the dogs are getting. I am in the minority here but that is my feeling. and I ask you KINDLY to respect it.

Well my personal feeling about people who form negative opinions of things they can never personally understand is one of general distaste.

I ask you to kindly respect THAT.

have a wonderful day!
