Sounds great! A few years ago I rescued a Dandie Dinmont Terrier that had been abused. It took much longer to earn her trust. Be patient and I'm sure that you both will forget her past and enjoy a wonderful life together.

Default pitbull wont play
Hey everyone I need some advice. I believe the young pitbull that I have has been abused in the past, I found him starving, and others told me they had seen him be shot at. Anyway, he is the SWEETEST, most gentle dog ever. He comes up to me holding a sock and other things in his mouth, but when i got to try and play with him he just tucks his tail and lays down. I feel so bad for him. What should I do to make him know that he will never be hurt again. And will he ever play?

Have you taken him to the vet just to be sure he's ok, physically?

Gee it could be numerous things...
How old is he?
How long have you had him?
As Michele said..been to the Vet?
It takes time for dogs/pups to adjust to a new lifestyle and home and all...especially people. The older the pup is, it usually it hits them harder and take them longer.

Agreed - you need to take this little doggy soul to a vet, to rule out any physical issues (vision being one of them, but not limited to).

Once cleared, time and patience will be your partners.

When we took in Espe (our mostly Rottn dog) in 2002, she had NO clue how to play and showed physical and emotional signs of abuse.

She learned how to play, but it took some time and learning how to trust again.

Hahah, in the last few days Oscar (the pit that wouldnt play) has made a 360. I guess he just has some trust issues. He wont leave my socks alone. He is so gentle though. He has taken over my bed, so I just let him sleep with me. This morning he chewed up my purse. But he is still a pup.

I agree with this very much, Alot of praise and you can even go into a play bow to speak his language!

Does he have anything he can go into to feel safe and secure??
as for toys I would only balls and just roll them to him and praise him for sniffing or paying attention to it...he'll come around!
good luck! He's lucky to have someone who cares!!
