Movin to the hood (only place I could find that would take my dogs)

I will have a good sized fenced yard, but there is a dog next door and although the fence is solid wood, I don't want to take any chances. Also, the back of the yard is chain link (I said it was in the hood!)

Anyway, I want to be able to chain up my male so I can *gasp* have him outside for a couple hours without me standing there with the leash in my hand. Someone will be home the whole time, and checking on him, and he won't be chained for longer than 4 hours, tops.

Okay. So he's about 55lbs and strong as an ox. There is a tree I could tie a chain around.

I have ZERO idea of what to ask for at the hardware store or what I even need.

I'm the type of girl that asks for 'thingies' at home depot and last time I had a flat, I just sat on the corner and cried until a nice guy pulled over and changed it for me .

So, I ask you, my fellow PBCers to hold my fragile little girl hand through this and tell me exactly what to ask for. Pics would be a bonus.

Since the back fencing is chainlink, I would recommend to thread those 'thingies' (yup, I am a 'thingy' girl too) through there (plastic stuff), so as to provide a visual barrier. That stuff usually comes in green.

Other than that, I have NOT one suggestion, since I have no experience with chain set ups.

car axle, pole driver, chain, 3 lap links, 1 swivel, 1 "O" ring, 2 inch collar and a dog

drive the axle flush to the ground

dont use bullsnaps or quick links, your dogs will not get out if you use the above and install correctly

Print out the pictures and just take it to Home Depot.. I think you can get everything but the axle there.

Didn't someone post a way to do a chain set up with a buried bucket of concrete vs. the axle?

Maybe try to PM Boogieman or NCPG.... I know both of them can walk you through it, Marty provided great pictures.. I'm a "thing-a-ma-jig" kinda girl too...lol But I know I've talked with NCPG about this stuff, he knows his stuff

You can get it all except the axle from home depot, you'll have to get the axle at a junkyard... you'll need a sledge hammer to drive the axle in the ground as there about 3 ft long you'll also need a pair of vise grip pliers and a hammer to close the lap links together, hope this helps and yes I would print out the pics and take them with you

Now thats a helluva deal..call some junkyards, pick yourself up an axle and get a guy friend to spend a few mins hammering it in and you are set!! Its a one time deal, once its done and you have a set up that will last.

Just wanted to add another option to the fenced in yard. Can't be too careful.

My girlfriend's APBTs are escape artists (dig, climb, jump) She is gone 8 to 10 hours a day and didn't want to chain them for that long. So we went to the local farm, feed n garden store n picked up some of that cheap electric fencing like they use for cows/horses, etc. It just clamps onto the fencing and you can control the "sting" power low , med or high. We ran it all the way around the bottom of the fence. Very easy to install!

One of her dogs tapped up against the wiring once..and never went near the fence again. It took the stubborn one 3 times...but he no longer goes up to the fence. And now she has not even been turning it on and both dogs are programmed to stay away from the fence. It's been 5 months now..works great.

You have to be careful with these electric fences. I used it in the past. One day a friend brought his pit over to play and I forgot that she didn't know about the fence. When she hit it, she freaked out, ran to the other side of the yard, and jumped right over a 6 foot fence to get away from it.

Dogs will also test the fence from time to time. A weed or a rodent can short it out, and when the dogs realize this they dig out again.

If you are movin to the hood, keep a good eye on your dog while chained up outside-Id be afraid of him getting stolen.

And I have an electric fence that didnt phase dogs in the past. I now have my goats in it and they have learned to put sticks under the wires to short it out-and they push out underneath. I even bought the high charged cattle panel. The dogs would get out, and shake from being electrocuted, but they'd do it again and again.
