It is really rather hard to tell...he might weigh that much from genetics, or over feeding...(dont get me wrong, I am not saying you are dumb or anything, but it happens more often than not)

Genetics will play the bigger role here....what kind of "pit bull" is it?
depending on the mix, it mayjust be opverweight!

Ours are full grown and they are both less than 40!

56 pounds is on the bigger end, but still within the standard (30-60 pounds).

I've got a pretty evenly matched set here:

Loki (4 years old): 44 pounds
Priest (9 months): 48 pounds
Terra (9 months): 42 pounds

He's big for a 7 month old dog IMO. Alot depends on genetics, but he will easily pass 60 pounds by a year old, and continue gaining weight at a slower rate until he's fully mature...I think you may have 70+ pounder full grown, but that of course is jist a guess. Some people will take the 6 mos. and double it as an estimate.

To more accurately estimate his future weight...what do you know about the last 4 generations on his pedigree? How large were those dogs?

HA! Mines the biggest!
sorry, couldn't resit

Actually I've got a female am staff. At 7 months she was about 50 lbs. She's 2 now and weighs 70 pounds. She's my full figured girl so she's probably about 5 pounds overweight.

My girl is approximately 6 years old, and when I took her to the vet at the beginning of Feb. she was 47lbs, she's usually 47-49 ish. I know she is maybe a pound or two heavy, at the most, though.

no he doesn't look over weight in the pics...all I can really say is that time will tell better than any estimation! My gues on the info that you provided is that he will be right around 70 lbs.

My Pit is about 70 lbs, , he is at a healthy weight, you can easily feel his ribs with slight fat cover, and he has very well defined muscles. I don't know why he is so large, as for the standard, 30-60, oops! I can't make my baby any smaller, and at sixty pounds he would look severly underweight. Genetics does play a big role, Apollo's dad, and grandpa were both huge.

30-60 is the standard but it also says that heavier weights are acceptable if they are in porportion (did I spell that right?) to height.

Just for clarity's sake for the OP...

The excerpt from the UKC standard...

Height and Weight

  • The American Pit Bull Terrier must be both powerful and agile so actual weight and height are less important than the correct proportion of weight to height. Desirable weight for a mature male in good condition is between 35 and 60 pounds. Desirable weight for a mature female in good condition is between 30 and 50 pounds. Dogs over these weights are not to be penalized unless they are disproportionately massive or rangy.
and from the ABDA standard in reference to what is desired...

Above all, the American Pit Bull Terrier should appear to be an all around athlete. His body is called upon for speed, power, agility and stamina. He must be balanced in all directions. Too much of one thing, robs him of another. In his ideal form, he is a thing of beauty.

and from the AADR's standard...

SIZE
The breed has Historically been of great size variation, however, Males are perferred not over 70 pounds and Females
are perferred not over 60 pounds, as extremely large dogs seldom show fluid and agile movement.
