last night i got home and my rabbit was in obvious distress. I thought he was dead when i walked in but when i picked him up, he was still breathing (barely). i knew that it was grim and called Hickory Pet Hospital to inquire about euthanasia as i didn't want the little guy to suffer.
they said they could do it, so i brought him in. the two women who took care of me were kind and relatively unjudgemental. however, i was shocked by the bill. i expected it to be high since it is an emergency vet hospital, but $260 to have a rabbit euthanized seems outrageous to me (it cost me $50 to have it done at my regular vet on a non-emergency basis). they charged me $80 for an examination fee. they did not examine the rabbit. they charged $80 for the euthanasia. the disposal fee was $100. and the woman working at hte front desk was not at all kind. she was not dealing with me at all. after it was all done, i went to pay. i found this odd too, in the past when i've had animals put down they always sent me the bill, but i guess at an ER with a non-regular customer it is probably harder to collect. so i was waiting at the front desk while the woman who had helped me tried to find where somethign had printed. this took about 10 minutes. i was standing their, trying to keep it together. i was upset. I had just had my pet euthanized. there were tears. the other woman working out front was chatting with another customer and they were both trying very hard to pretend i was not there. they didn't even offer me a freaking tissue. i will be locating another emergency vet facility in case i need it for my other pets. |
