No. Just asking at the moment. It's not I don't like pets--I had a cat when I was a kid--but I'm commuting for now and looking to be an R.A. next year (and Temple no likey pets)
![]() What I would like is a list of pounds and pet orphanages, volunteer organizations, etc., that the casual PS browser can look at as a reference for his/her pet needs. |

PAWS has a network of foster anomals - both with the PSPCA (new animal control) and from PACCA.
Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) - Mine's a cutie pie... ETA: (and she's available for adoption immediately! If I can let her go) |

Morris Animal Shelter on Lombard (between 12th and 13th) is a good place to adopt. Most vets have available pets or have notices for adoptable cats and dogs. If you have a specific breed in mind you should consider a rescue program. Simply type the name of the breed and the word rescue into your search.

If you're looking for a cat or kitten, try City Kitties. All cats are fostered in individual homes (there's no shelter facility).

You can check out PetFinder.com, which lists animals from all participating shelters.
As an FYI, being a recent adopter of an amazing dog, I absolutely HATE the shelters in Philly. 90% of their animals are fostered out and when I tried to contact the fosters, half of them never returned my calls and the other half were in the process of getting their animals adopted (and quite rudely told me so). And no, I didn't just check out one or two - I literally had a list of 20+ animals I was interested in, each one for which I wrote very detailed emails to make sure I was getting the right one. The PAWS and PSPCA people were no help because, in their view, as soon as the animal leaves their control, they forget about it until it comes back. We got our dog from the Delco SPCA and had a very pleasant experience. |

I did not get my dogs in philly (they are SPCA dogs from Orlando and Baltimore) but I did go to the philadelphia SPCA to get their licenses when i moved to the city and i checked the joint out. i was very impressed. i could easily have gotten two more dogs while i was there, but alas, i can't afford the boarding fees for so many and i have to travel for work.

You have lots of options.
1) To do the most good for animals: ACCT, the city's dog pound, is desparate for fosters. Issues: 1)you cannot adopt initially (except at their periodic "Adoption Days" , one on this Saturday). It's some kind of legal problem because they are funded by the city. However you can get around it by "fostering -to- adopt"... it amounts to the same thing. 2) Acct's dog population is primarily pit bull mixes because they are legally obligated to accept every animal turned in or picked up as a stray and some of our idiot population thinks it's cool to breed these pits in the backyard and then try to sell them or dump them. I've changed my mind about this breed since working with PAWS, but you have to be the right kind of person to take on these larger dogs (it's not just the pitties, but Rotties, Shepards, Boxers...) 3) The health of Acct's animals is not the best unless you get them out of the shelter as earlyas possible. Shelter health is not good anywhere, so I have nothing to compare it with, just anecdotal and personal experience with the cat side and hearing from dog fosters. Usually not horrendous problems, but don't count on a perfectly healthy animals. Kennel Cough is the norm. The PSPCA: runs Acct, at least until they can't afford it any more. But they have their own foster and adoption programs and do not take strays. Facility is clean, reasonably well run except for the chaos earlier this year, but again has mostly large dogs. They pull the dogs deemed adoptible from ACCT, and have training programs and lots of support for adopters. You can browse the dogs in a beautiful greenhouse setting any day. It's certainly worth a visit. PAWS; Used to be attached to the former incarnation of ACCT (PACCA) and did adoptions and fostering from the Hunting Park location. Now has its own small building at 2nd and ARch but will be moving to a bigger place in August. They get most of their animals from ACCT. One of the staff is quite skilled at selecting animals that are in the best health and temperament and can be reasonably housed in this tiny place. It has room for only a few (large) dogs at a time, sometimes has a few small dogs, but mostly caters to cats. It's a positive organization, very small staff and very dependent on volunteers and foster parents. Doesn't provide as much medical support for foster parents as ACCT and the SPCA but does have clinics at least once a week for what they can handle. I really don't know what they do for situations that they can't handle but they find a way. Definitely worth a visit. The staff love the dogs they get... most Pit mixes again, but like I said, I've changed my attitude towards them. Recently they've had a Corgi/Chiquaqua mix, a cocker mix, and some other little fluffy guy... the woman doing the pulling from ACCT gets these little ones by being there when they come in and getting them out fast. They go to foster or adoption really quickly, but usually also have some age/kennel related health problems. Craiglist- everyone posts all the dogs (and cats and turtles, etc) that they must get rid of (rehome) for any legitimate or idiotic reason you can think of. Be careful with your negotiations. Some are backyard breeders, some are trying to make money on a dog they got tired of in 3 months, etc. And some are legitimate people who really want a good home for a dog they can't keep any more. PETFINDER.COM- big online list of adoptibles. There are other places but these are the ones I have had contact with. jo |

I just got a dog from the SPCA. I was very impressed. The place was very clean, all the shots are up to date, fixed and I can come back for the next year and get all the upcoming shots. |
