the proof of it not being censorship is in the mods section.
the hows and whys of an action are discussed there.
the information from there is strictly confidential so we are unable to provide the details.

suffice to say, it was simply a moderation action, taken with the best interests of the forum at heart.
many threads are closed when they degenerate.... this one was closed for a few hours to prevent it getting to the point where muliple posts have to be deleted because it was at the 'you prove it' 'no you prove it'.. and 'space is our destiny so i'm not open to the other points posters are raising' stage.

it was an interesting thread and now it is still there to be used. the alternative was escalation and deletion.

forum users have complained that the mods are not pro active... we can't win !

At the end of the day I guess a mods job is damned if you do damned if you don't....

Couldn't and wouldn't do the good work you do.

This time I disagree

Do like the "time out " or "sin binned " idea
Bit one sided this time

ah, what you didn't see was why.

the time out was given for continuing the argumentative line in the chat thread, not for anything posted in the thread.

in the past threads have been closed, then reopened when the ongoing discussion in the chat thread was on topic and not personal. the chat thread posts were moved into the thread and healthy discussion continued.

It's the right way to do it - As I mentioned many months ago.

The simple fact is that India's space program has little to do with improving the lot of average and poor Indians, it's about demonstrating technological superiority over Pakistan.
As a side effect though, for a country to attain technological superiority over a neighbor it must put its education system in competition with that neighbor. Improvements in education always lead to improvements in social conditions.

India's space programme will improve _on_ the caste system simply through the improved education of its citizens.

I agree that improved education is a key factor in improving social conditions, my point was simply that this (investment in space technologies) isn't being done for purely altruistic reasons. It's also worth pointing out that the shear number of people in China's and India's middle class means there is little shortage of highly educated and motivated individuals - that is neither country has a large need to recruit up from the lower socio-economic groups.

It should also be pointed out that despite the excellence of its educational institutions, the USA's current level of social mobility is pretty sucky... So maybe the correlation between education and social reform changes over time based on other factors. I'm not sure that this is relevant to India's situation right now, though.
