I didn't realise that "quote mining" necessarily implied quoting out of context. only if you want to have a dig.

To quote Wikipedia:

"The practice of quoting out of context, sometimes referred to as "contextomy" or "quote mining", is a logical fallacy"

I didn't realise that "quote mining" necessarily implied quoting out of context.
I think the term specifically referrers to using a quote to prove a point, kinda like an "Appeal to Authority"

I'm sure he'll be happy to appeal to authority again in the future.

I might swap my present one for one of these....

"The best way to predict the future is to create it."

"A journey of a thousand light-years begins with a single step." ~ Confucius (extended 13 orders of magnitude)

"Earth is the cradle of humanity, but it is impossible to live forever in the cradle." ~ Tsiolkovski, 1912 (Russian rocketry pioneer & futurist)

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." ~ Margaret Mead

Wise words are always worth repeating.

Just so you know - I have signatures and avatars switched off. Whatever pearls of wisdom you think might be in there, I have opted not to display them.

That's your right and privilege but I prefer to see it all....
Although some have me on that "non display" list, I prefer to see all, and listen to all, then offer further expertise and authoritive comment from appropriate quarters.

Of which you personally have none.... You are, after all, one of those armchair experts that you so often accuse others of being...

Perhaps if you demonstrated that you were capable of original thought instead of copying opinions that aren't your own and saying "me too", you might actually appear to be knowledgeable and authoritive on a subject that you are clearly interested in.

That is one of the things that really annoys me - people quote "famous" people as if it is fact and the answer to any argument. My response is invariably along the lines of:

Just because somebody said something, doesn't make it true...
I like this quote by Abraham Lincoln:
Just because it's on the internet, doesn't make it true.

Of course with the shift to "expertise" and authoritive comment" debate, there is not one of us, nor not one of the many astro-physicists and astronomers etc that do not go to higher authority and/or other more expert opinion when needed.
Not being a near infinite crucible of knowledge, when contrary opinion to mine surfaces, or when different opinions to mine are posted on the forum, I will do exactly what we all, you you and I do. Go to a higher authority and/or search for more expert opinion to support my own
.
That includes 'wise" phrases when needed, again just as we all do.

Now why would anyone think like that.
I'm not that familiar with "ontologist" but I'm pretty sure he/she is OK and not causing you too may problems.
Perhaps you need a councilor to work yourself through your troubled state?

Because, like in your previous post, ontologist manages to say very little whilst saying a lot....

Ontologist was a member who used long winded ways of saying simple things in a similar manner to the post I referred to. It was a light hearted remark that I thought would amuse you. It seems not, and you stooped to making personal insults again.

If I needed a councillor, I would spell it correctly.

Basically the old name transition to formula used to use on the old forum.

And, for the record, I was trying to be friendly with you BC. It's how many blokes interact, a bit of light hearted pisstaking that we can both laugh at.
