Well why not just buy a good skeleton watch? Get one with a turbillion escapement.. that'll keep your eyes occupied better than a television or a campfire at night.
Yes, they are fascinating. Difficult to tell the time with though, and I don't think I can find one in my price range.

I have a lovely Revue skeleton which I will hate to part with but it is in as new condition and I'm in need of folding stuff. Edit: I have worn it a bit so scratch the as new part and replace it with 'driven only by a little old lady'

if telling the time is all you need.. try this

.. er, sorry.. the timing seems off a bit..

(a watch sent to me for refurbishment)

Hello roughbarked

Thanks for your input. I have spent the last 3 days looking through that Mactalk link you provided. Some fascinating stuff there.

On balance, I have decided to go ahead with my plans to obtain a good quality mechanical movement Swiss watch – notwithstanding the fact that it will probably contain a mass-produced ETA ebauche. However, I don’t want to pay through the nose by purchasing at a city boutique. I see that Amazon’s watch prices are generally 20-30% less expensive than Australian retail outlets. What do you think of Amazon as a place to purchase a Swiss watch? Do you have other sources you would recommend?

At this stage of my research, I am favouring a TAG or Baume & Mercier chronograph. The models I am considering are these:

http://www.amazon.com/TAG-Heuer-CAR2...ograph+watches

http://www.amazon.com/Baume-Mercier-...ercier+watches

http://www.amazon.com/Baume-Mercier-...ercier+watches

As you can see, I favour the classic uncluttered look, with white face and leather strap. Do you have an opinion about any of these watches? Is there any way I can get information on the movement they contain? I have heard that the TAG chrono actually contains an in-house manufactured movement. Would this be a good thing or a bad thing? Why is the Baume and Mercier about $1,000 less expensive than the TAG?

Any information appreciated.
Just to throw a spanner in the works. There's a nice German ( Swiss) chrono that I kind of like.

Heck mate.. that would be like me expecting you to pay me for working out a reliable measurement of longitude on rough seas.

Might have to have a go at it myself. Could be an interesting little hobby for a while.

let us debase this context to tap fittings.

you previously purchased brass tap fittings.. along came plastic mouldings and snap lock

You paid the same for plastic mouldings as for the brass.. you paid extra for snap lock.

I'd like to see the Swiss hear you analogise watchmaking with plumbing.

Well excuse me for not recognising the manufacturer of a movement from its photo.

I must have been confused by the Askania website that says:

"Reviving the true spirit of the company’s founder we introduce Askania watches 2002. These exceptional automatic watches are produced for highest precision, shock and water resistant to 100m. Some models have a mineral crystal bottom imprinted with the "Heinkel Arrow", which reveals the beautiful mechanics of the automatic Swiss movement.Following the tradition Askania today continues the legend with:

Highest Precision
Dependability
Functional Design
Robust and indestructible
Exclusively Swiss Precision Calibres (except for calibre GD3)
"

And maybe I was misled by this

"Askania Automatik-Kaliber ASK 4062 auf Basis des Valjoux 7750"

I'd already done that research which is why I described the watch as "German (Swiss)". If that photo shows a Seiko movement, fine, the website is wrong, but you're out of order to accuse me of being "idle".

It wasn't meant to be taken as a personal insult. If that offence was mine then I apologise. It was meant to not turn this thread into one that loses itself in conspiracy theories and before that irks anyone, I'm not suggesting that anyone did. The original question was answered. We could make this run for 15-20 or 100 pages though that has already been done elsewhere. There do exist watch manufacturers using their own movements, they may be counted on one hand. None of them fall into the price category. Photo recognition should help but if each manufacturer makes their own alterations, no photo is going to be easy to view unless a purist pulls it apart.

Yes, several German manufacturers use Swiss movements. This has long been the case. There are French watches with Chinese movements too. The Opel is a German car, no? What engine did Jack Brabham use?
My reference to idleness mainly pointed to the fact that others have newer faster computers and broadband connections, use the latest browsers and are quite capable. I may well be able to help with identifications and know better search terms but I'd personally be better off spending my time fixing the watch.

Again, I'm sorry if offence has been taken.
