This guy misses the point. All the money spent on these rare species is wasted, pretty or ugly. We need to concentrate on the abundant species while we still can. When there is just a few thousand left it is too late, humans breed so fast that these rare species will never be able to re-establish. There are already lots of kids who have never seen a wild kangaroo. We have to think in terms of geological time - what species will still be around in 10,000 years (apart from zoos or fenced enclosures of course)?

The rare species advocates don't have to worry though, our economic system equates rarity with value, so we will always be happy to waste money on rare species, and wait for the common ones to become rare before acting.

If we're going to get utilitarian about conservation we should prioritise ecosystem function, so focussing on the losses most likely to reverberate through to affect other species. Problem is sometimes that isn't apparent until a critter/plant is already gone
