Default Global Forest Disturbance Alert System
The Global Forest Disturbance Alert System (GloF-DAS) provides data on forest disturbance globally on a quarterly basis.

Reliable maps of global forest cover change are frequently years out-of-date. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop techniques for monitoring and verifying land cover change and forest disturbances in a timely, low-cost, and accurate manner. Satellite remote sensing from instruments such as NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) offers a consistent and cost-effective method for mapping forest cover change. MODIS data are obtained freely with global daily cover products. Deforestation tracker

You can select time period and location on the map.

I've just been browsing this and cross-referencing it with the Northern Australia Fire Information (NAFI) site, because Dec 2011 shows changes to the cover around Mt Bartle Frere (Wooroonooran* NP). There hasn't been fire or timber getting in that area**, but I wonder if that recorded change is associated with the dry season? (Although they do say they take seasonal changes into account. Hmmm.)

_____________

* Yes, it took a few goes.

** That I know about. I will have to ask.

I figured someone here would know a lot more about this than I do. I was looking around North East Gippsland (Orbost) in Victoria which is a major logging area and should have been north of the 2009 bushfires. I know that country better than I know Queensland. I thought the south coast of NSW near Eden might also appear but it doesn't. Or at least not in December 2011. I'm guessing this might be a work-in-progress.

Indeed. I'm definitely bookmarking it for reference.

Edited to add: And thanks to Ilago for posting it.
