You can add 5 tags to threads you initiate, or 2 to any other thread. I've been putting them in many of the SSSF and Scribbly threads (content type threads, rather than chat type ones, anyway), sticking to broad categories.
Check out the tag cloud for examples of the most popular ones. It's not a requirement, but can be a useful function for finding threads in the future. |

Wot helix said Purps. For threads of your own you can add five tags and for threads started by others you can add two tags. I note you can also delete them, even the ones you didn't add. Dunno if that's a good idea, people might be tempted to play funny burgers (present company excepted of course). |

Only really important in the sense that the more tags there are that are the same, the larger the font. A quick and easy way to see what the most popular topics are, but only really works if everyone uses the same tags. Eg. someone may use Spider, whilst someone else may leave that out and use Arachnid which would then make the topic of spiders look a little less popular than it may actually be.
I did start tagging threads, but sort of forgot about it until this thread popped up to remind me. I spend quite a bit of time on Trove doing corrections as I search out historical material and I use tags a lot as a means of keeping track of articles I've read (but the tags that appear in my cloud are my own, not a collective effort). Speaking of Trove, it's a really good site for finding stuff from years ago, including nature based items. Makes for some fascinating reading IMHO (but I'm a bit weird like that), I love how I can listen to or watch something of a historical nature and then go back and read the news stories that came out at the time, get a great feel for the "vibe of the thing". BTW, there are two members who have each corrected over a million lines of text! (I've done a bit over 10,500). Not just old newspapers either, lots of great things there. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ (sorry for getting off-topic, promise not to make a habit of it). |
