Default Question about Brolga's ??
How far south do Brolgas go on the eastern seaboard ??

A bloke down here at Lennox head took a photo of some foraging in the cane fields near his van village, he reckons they have been spotted before but vary rarely .

Also what would make them fly down here ??

Cheers.

I'm not sure how far they extend coastally, but they certainly occur in SW Victoria.

Edited: As jj has just pointed out. I do need to type faster.

The first answer to your question is that it's "brolgas", plural, not "Broga's" possessive.

The second answer is a cheat from wiki

Brolgas are widespread and often abundant in north and north-east Australia, especially north-east Queensland, and are common as far south as Victoria. They are also found in southern New Guinea and as rare vagrants in New Zealand and the northern part of Western Australia. The population is estimated at between 20,000 and 100,000. The International Crane Foundation began a captive breeding population with three pairs of wild Brolga that were captured in 1972. Brolga are non-migratory but do move in response to seasonal rains.

Huge variation in the population estimation. Seems unsatisfactory to me.

Thanks everyone for your comments, never been that big on grammer anyway. ( isn't that a type of pumpkin ??) My point got across, as for the Brolgas geographic distribution , I didn't think they were that wide spread, I'll be sure to keep an eye out when i'm on my travels further south.

Brolga are non-migratory but do move in response to seasonal rains. I know we have had a lot of rain, but I thought QLD has had way more than us, so back to my second part of my original question Also what would make them fly down here ??

what would make them fly here.. The weather in Queensland too wet..?
Summer holiday?

They are often seen dancing in the rice paddy after rice has been harvested.

Most likely explanation is they are following food sources plants, invertebrates and frogs, that are associated with the rains, you have had plenty of over east.
Population estimates would also be difficult on animals that are mobile and spread over such a large range, would need to get a widespread population estimate over a short period, best way may be using aircraft similar to Kangaroo and Camel estimates (though these are questioned or questionable as well). Overall populations would most likely fluctuate greatly depending seasons.
