might have planets.
That's far over a viginillion, which is ten to the 20th power. Smart life took 5 billion years to evolve here...the cosmos is 13 billion yrs old. Some alien societies may be 6 billion yrs older than us...allowing their planets two billion yrs before getting started, because the early cosmos was turmoil. Since the first problem aliens would tackle would be mortality, ... Once they solved that, they would age indefinitely. So we will someday run into beings who are 6 billion years old, who have 6 billion years of science lab research to draw upon. That is a lot of research. Not only data on things like lasers, but also upping their own intelligence. 6 billion years of increasing it. Each increase helps them find new ways to increase further. An acceleration of improvement that leads to a graph of the hyperbola form. Q. What marvels will that enable them to do? |

LOL so true!
But with so many societies trying to act wisely, ... And if just one DOES.. It will spread to occupy the ruined planets that ended in nuclear war. Thence to do its 6 billion yrs of science lab research. Keep in mind that such labs will be on many planets, so total research will be 6 000 000 000 years times say, 10 to 18th power (of planets), Giving this many planet-years of lab research: 6 X 10 to the 27th. 6 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 planet-years. All that data will be mulled over by beings with 6 billion years of increasing their intelligence. I should say HAS been mulled over, since they are likely 6 billion years older than we are, right now. Today. All this has probably taken place already and the lab data is all stored in their library. Somewhere. |

It's a nice idea, but this makes the basic assumption that alien life will be anything like human life, and that their society will have evolved and developed in much the same way as ours.
I think the possibilities when it comes to life on other planets is vast - if we did ever meet another form of life that actually resembled us then wow, you know? What are the chances of that? |

ever see the movie Contact? that was a great one to base your argument on....is it the minds eye that thinks there is life out there or are there aliens trying to contact the Earth that are just reaching out galaxy? But the 2001-A Space Odyssey book has a similar treatment. We're likely only to see a civilization that's extremely far advanced to our own using the mental forms we know. |
