Default Cold is killing manatees in unprecedented numbers
Here's a bit:

A record number of manatees have died because of Florida's lengthy winter, and so many manatees are turning up stressed by the cold that it's straining the statewide system for caring for the injured marine mammals.

So far this year the number of manatees killed by the cold is approaching 200, which Martine DeWit of the state Fish and Wildlife Research Institute called "really unprecedented."

By mid February, 301 manatees had turned up dead from various causes. The average number of deaths for this time of year over the previous five years is just 10, DeWit said.

manatees look like they hit an evolutionary road block. They are some of the most not so pretty creatures in the sea.

Moon O'dudette I heard that a while back. They are one of earths most gentle creatures and it's a shame global warming has hit them with such force.

It sucks. Until the water warms back up, there's not much to be done. The last two+ months are the coldest I have ever seen in the last 30+ years of living here. A night or two in the 20's? Absolutely. Weeks of it? Nope..... It's taking it's toll for sure... In a wide variety of ways.....

I disagree. I think they're adorable. Granted, not as sleek as dolphins, but for a sea cow, quite cute. But perhaps I'm biased as I have seen them up close at the Lowry Park zoo. They have an awesome habitat for them there and the only thing separating you from them underwater is thick glass.

If these temps go on much longer, it's gonna do nothing but get worse for them and the rest of the flora & fauna down here that depend on our 'tropical' climate.

A new nickname

Yeah, gotta love the 'warming' going on eh? Quick! More Carbon Tax will solve everything! Tho I shouldn't joke.... Also, I know some who will appreciate these creatures dying off. Some boaters. So many complain about the No Wake zones in the canals because of Manatees. They must rush where ever they are going. If the Manatees disappear so will the laws that slow those boats down so the Manatees don't get run over.... Which still happens anyway cuz some assholes refuse to slow down.

My children love them. My youngest swam with them last time we were in Florida.

Manatees are pretty useless really, but hey, at least they're not as destructive as our species!
