Do polar bears, which have become the poster child for the potential ravages of future global warming, need special protection from Uncle Sam now?
That's the question under consideration at the US Fish and Wildlife Service, which is poised to recommend whether the icon of the Arctic should be officially designated as a threatened species – even though the bear's numbers currently are not in precipitous decline. The judiciousness of protecting the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), in anticipation that its frozen habitat will be thawing as a consequence of climate change, is a matter of hot debate. Well, we use more resources than anyone else, so I would imagine it'd be our fault more than anyone else's. Of course, I'm not completely sure. I do know that it's the human race in general that's causing this, that's for sure. How about this for a comprimise: First, we make sure that all the children in our country are fed, clothed and abuse-free. Then we work on the rest of the world. Then we work on cancer and AIDS. Then, if there's money and time left over, we worry about the animals.... |

we both live in capitalist countries so all the kids will never be fed and clothed.sadly thats the price we pay.
and biodiversity effects us all no matter where we live.one species becoming extinct affects lots of other species and forms of life on the planet. hows about we compromise and make sure all the kids of the world are fed and clothed and abuse free..that would be nice too dont you think? |

I personally believe it's all countries responsibility to protect wildlife. However, as far as I know, polar bears do not come from the USA. Surely it's Canada's responsibility to protect them first and foremost? I'm sure the USA have got enough endangered species to protect on their own soil first and foremost?
