Epidemiologists, and psychiatrists have discovered that the humans bout with holiday depression may be a link with what animals experience during deep winter hibernation, is it possible that "phototherapy" or light therapy might be a viable solution for pulling people out of the mires of holiday depression?

When I was in Japan they told us the holidays were the worst time for suicide and depression. We had 2 full-day safety standdowns to alert us to this problem. Yet nobody attempted suicide.
That April, we had 2 attempts. My theory is this. Why would you kill yourself around the holidays? I mean, we got 4 days off for Thanksgiving, then 4 days for XMas, then 4 days for New Years. The a 3 day weekend for President's Day. I mean, there's days off everywhere! But come the April-May time frame, there's no holidays. No time off for months. I mean, the end of February to May for Memorial Day. Then nothing til July. Then nothing til September. So there's my theory. |

Well you are aware that people often do suffer from holiday anxieties and depression right? I understand your theory and appreciate as always your input, but either not having any family, or financial troubles, relationship problems, these all magnify around the holiday's for some reason. The other problems were prevalent all year long, especially with young people away from home for the first time. Not just away from home, but in a different country to boot. It irked me that it got so much focus during the holiday season, but no attention the rest of the year. |

it can be a terrible time for people who have no family ,the elderly especially, and those whove lost loved ones during the year.
i agree its the combination of the stress involved to just do one day like the tv ads say we should, and the short days,i for one need sunlight. since we had no summer to speak of in england i think were all suffered from SAD here. |
