4 July 2012 | The Sun The clip, taken at the US Olympic Team Trials in San Jose, California, on Sunday, shows athlete Nastia Liukin warming up before tackling the uneven bars. But after executing a series of turns and spins around the bar, she failed to catch herself following a release move, crashing to the mat instead. Nastia, who took home the Olympic all-around title in 2008, lay face-down for a few seconds, before pulling herself back to her feet. After composing herself, she went on to finish her routine - despite knowing she now had no chance of qualifying for London 2012. And after finishing, the plucky competitor was rewarded with a standing ovation from the crowd. Failing in her bid to represent the US this summer means the end of Nastia's gymnastic career, who at 22 is a relative veteran in the youth-focused sport. But she took the setback with good grace, saying on Twitter: "Thank you to the 18,000 people that gave me a standing ovation tonight. "I will remember this moment for the rest of my life." |
