The problem is that it never asked me for a CD key when I installed it. If it did I woulda just downloaded a key generator and re-installed it.

So I "borrowed" a stand alone copy of CS 1.6 from the intrabutts. It works fine if I just play a game by myself but if I try to connect to a server I get an "Invalid CD Key" error. I'm also running it in Wine on Ubuntu. Any suggestions or do I need to "borrow" another copy.

it happens with a lot of those types of games. starcraft is similar, in that you can use any correctly hashed key, but once you try to play online, the server requests the key, and if it does not have a record of such a key (legal copy, the key already registered with the server, from being placed on the box) it responds with 'Invalid CD Key', which indicates:

a) you are not the original owner of the game, because someone has already registered it, then decided they hated online play, then resold it; or

b) you bought a program online that hashes a key together, that the cs1.6 installer can use, but cannot use online, since the servers have never seen such a key.

to remedy either of these two situations, you need to buy the game, from a retail outlet or online retail site, not an auction style website, in order to be the original owner.

Steam (Company trademark for valve) invented a program which generates keys from 1 cd key. Unfortunatley for us all.. That cd key has been with held for quite sometime now. And although some people even GUESSED some cd keys, the chances of you getting a cd key right will probably take you 1 full year. But hey... What do I know.. It's all about chance... Now look at first two... the factors of the 13 digit cd key are endless... Regardless of generating keys.. valve assumed we wouldn't know... But in fact... It is very simple to infer. Because not only do they add and subtract, but they use a cd key to subtract or add another cd key.. for example... 2717-52772-8089 + 3869-14842-5364 = 6586-67615-3453.. and i dont know if it works.. but it should.. Try adding them or subtracting them.. If they higher then 13 digit then it wont work (no shit).

Hey guys
I think it's a problem with windows system used because every windows 7 or 64-bit system give invalid cd key and with xp 32-bit is working fine.
I tried this reg file it's the same that i have and it doesn't work
