Get AVG & spybot.
AVG will automatically update itself & then scan automatically as well.
Use Spybot & immunize your computer. It will prevent a lot of known virus's, trojans & many other pests from annoying you. The update is not automatic & should be updated every 2 weeks or so, you also need to re-immunise after each update, but it is simple & the protection is always on..

PC's so outnumber Mac's that the viruses are mfg for PC so it's more effective, hits more computers. If Mac doesn't die on the vine and in fact gets popular, it will also get the attention of the malicious virus peddlers.

Avast! not only has real-time protection, but you can run a boot level scan with it, which can catch some things that can't be caught and quarantined with Windows running.

Geek Superhero is also good for real time protection. Though it isn't free, it's a cheap one time payment with lifetime support. It will automatically alert you if a setting's been changed, and so on (it can also be configured to revert certain changes automatically if you wish).

Mac users are simple minded that's why they want a computer that is simple to use and can't handle anything technical. And with Mac you lose your freedom of choice. With PC you can buy from multiple manufacturers and can choose to buy the accessories from so many vendors.
So PC = freedom
Mac = idiocy
