OK, I've got some time so I'll tell you a bit about my camera. I have a Nikon D40 and it's probably about as basic as a DSLR will get. I didn't really want a fancy shmancy one, though. I just wanted to be able to control the shutter release and aperture settings so that I could take pics of the Northern lights and I also wanted to take nice action shots at hockey games. I have the 18-55mm kit lens as well as a 55-200mm zoom lens that I bought later and I've found that those have worked well for me. Here are a few pics that I've taken with it. I think they're all with the kit lens. None of them were taken with a tripod because I'm too lazy to cart one around.

This is the only one taken with a tripod:

Ok, this pic isn't the best. It's shakey because I didn't use a tripod but the northern lights are spectacular. It's the only pic I have of northern lights because this was the only opportunity I've had to take pics since I got this camera.

One of my best hockey shots:

That's just a sampling of what I've shot with a D40. I'm not the best photographer by any stretch and I know I haven't realized the full potential of this camera. It's worked well for me as one who likes to dabble and I'd recommend it to anyone.
