Why in the heck does: 967715 - Last Review: February 24, 2009 - Revision: 1.0
How to correct "disable Autorun registry key" enforcement in Windows" keep wanting to update itself? I really am sick and tired of the automatic update popping up. Anyone have a clue? The only thing I have done is recently update the PC to 5 GB of RAM. |

It looks like thats just a normal windows update. It is probabally a good idea to just instally it, but if you dont want to, you can disable automatic updates by clicking start>control panel>automatic updates and disabling it there. But keep in mind, and new security flaws that are discovered in windows will remain in place on your computer. And I think I can safely say this isnt at all related to your 5G update

This makes no sense at all. Can you clarify what you are seeing. KB967715 is a Microsoft Knowledge base article on how to turn off autoplay on CD rom drives and USB drives. Nothing more. It isn't a program or anything? Are you saying that this web page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715 is opening every time you boot up? I'm very confused at what you are seeing. ![]() |

I additionally have one other 'general' question about my system that would go right along with the "Why in the heck" thread topic.
I do realize Windows XP professional will only allocate (originally) up to 2GB of system RAM. I did, however, remove two of the 512MB modules and install two 2GB sticks, leaving two 512MB modules behind. Pointless, I know, having a little over 5GB of DDR2 installed on a 32bit system. I left them installed. So, that being said, I eventually found the method to update the "boot.ini" file with the "/3GB" launch option to make Windows recognize (at least 3GB, I'm hoping) some of the extra RAM I've installed. What I can't understand, and I've been told, that Windows will actually, or can meet the 4GB threshold. I'm not accomplishing that. System Information reports 3GB now, but general system information still only reports 2GB. Of course, there is a variance from apps from MSCONFIG and general windows info. Hey, maybe one of you guys can elaborate on this a little further. Everything is much appreciated. |

It, the update, evidently is prompted by automatic updates for XP (SP3) each and every time windows is launched. The automatic update will not stop prompting me to update the computer, and additionally, sometimes will ask to do an automatic shutdown update. I'm just as confused as you are. I must have installed it (thinking it would eventually go away) about two dozen times. I was sadly mistaken. |

Something I failed to mention... Yes. The install is sucessful every single time. Can't go beyond that. Very strange. Start -> Control Panel > Administrative Tools -> Services Right click the "Automatic Updates" service and click stop navigate to C:\Windows\Softwaredistribution\ (note its a hidden folder) Delete all contents Start the above service again. The SoftwareDistribution folder will auto-repopulate and re-catalog what updates are required. |

My pleasure. It's a common problem. I didn't follow your first post but once you stated that you were being repeatedly offered a update I only had to find out if it was a failing updates or successful to point you to what path to follow. A failed update would have been a bigger PITA to solve. |

Well, I did go ahead and uninstall Windows XP update KB967715. I restarted and immediately the windows automatic update showed back up on the system tray. The first installation failed, so I immediately restarted again. Once again, the update popped back up, so I tried it again. This time, successful. Although... after an additional restart, it still comes up. I'm lost.

Well you jumped ahead.
![]() I was going to suggest this. Uninstall it. Then manually install it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en If Windows Update offers to install do a custom install, UNCHECK it and select never offer again. There are several reports of people having the same problem from what I'm finding on Google. And no solution other then this work around. |
