Default A Virus Question
My son's email account has some kind of virus bug in it. Can anyone identify what this is and how to get rid of it.

I have MSN9 and he uses one of my free email accounts with the extension of @msn.com

He has been bombarded by emails from porn sites, and what it's doing is everything you delete and move to the trash bounces back to your inbox before you can take the trash out.

I finally figured out that you can click on about 10 messages at a time, move them to the junk folder, then if I fast click I can open the junk folder, select all and hit delete. Then they are permanently gone. I have to do a few at a time, because they will roll back over to the inbox within just a few seconds if you don't hit delete in time.

When I started working on this today, there were over a thousand messages in there. I finally cleaned out all but about 30 of them by doing what I described above. He'll have to do the rest, as I don't which he wants to try to keep of those.

1. Can this ever be gotten rid of? It didn't affect his computer itself, since we both have been careful not to open any of the emails. It seems to just be hooked to the trash and junk folders. Both when opened, roll whatever is in them back to the inbox.

2. If there were emails in there from trusted sources, can or should we salvage them? or would they be infectuous too?

I can't see this as a virus. MSN is webbased mail. It isn't stored on your computer but on a Microsoft server. Reinstall the MSN software or ditch for something good like the FREE gmail. Gmail has spam control to help filter that crap.

MSN has all kinds of good filters too. I use the same and have never had a bit of problems. I'm pretty sure he got it off one of those dweeb sites like "rate me" or facebook. I know my son the Marine would not ever EVER actually visit one of those nasty porn sites on purpose.

When you say reinstall the software - let me ask you this. I'm seeing the same thing with it on my computer that he does on his computer. So isn't this in the web-based server account and not the computer. If that's so, then how can uninstalling the software on his computer fix it?

I'm kinda thinking if he just deletes everything out of his email account - then it would be gone. Would that make sense? But the problem is that he has a few emails in there that he doesn't want to lose - would it be safe if he knows they are from trusted sources to save those to his computer? Or would they have been infected also. It seems like to me that the only thing infected is his trash file.

That confirms it isn't a virus. MSN is fraked up again. It's a problem on there server. Call MSN support. (And if there filters were so good you wouldn't be seeing all that porn crap. My GMAIL account get over 1000 email spams a day. I see almost none of it. MSN sucks.)

Ok I'll try that. Thanks Nline for the advise.
Also thanks Pugmom, glad to know this
happened on yahoo too - though not glad to
know it was you it happened to. At least it's
no something major that infected his whole
computer.

i use Yahoo. it does some pretty wierd stuff from time to time.

i keep trying to set up my outlook to pop3 it, but it just doesn't work. it makes me nervous because i will have a thousand emails go missing for a few days at a time, sometimes.

I am OCD about archiving emails. I have about 10gb worth from when i worked at StarTek. Not supposed to, i guess....but i like to keep the excel files so i can steal formulas out of them that i find difficult to write. That and the VB scripting.

Oh, Kay, it appears your shorthorns are the Oklahoma State Champs. Congrats. Be sure to tell your son that if he gets an e-mail with "Nude Photos of Sarah Palin" in the subject line, do not open it. It might contain a virus. If he gets an e-mail with "Nude Photos of Hillary Clinton" in the subject line do not open it, either. It might contain nude photos of Hillary Clinton.

I've been using Eudora forever, it seems. The web-based email clients are crap, IMHO. Now that Eudora is open source, that may be the way to go. No hooks into Window$.

I'll pass that on about the nudies.

He had so many emails in there by the bootles from Tagged, Facebook, Dominoes, and the various pornsites, that I really think it came from one of those.

I've used MSN for many years, had the same email address, and I'm all over the internet with tons with of email newsletters, etc. So get my share of junk. Never have had a problem.
