Oh c'mon we all knew you had a big ol' soft spot for Andy.
Totally. She was the one who started the thread, after all.

Think you might be waiting a while for all of that. Can't you just go with Milos as a long term relationship with the promise of future success, and take Gulbis on the side for all your dirty little needs and desires?

Monogamy isn't for everyone.
lol!

"The Complex Sportsman" is, I think, the best way to describe Andy. Love him or hate him, he effortlessly held our attention. And I really liked the fact that he was/is so super smart. It gave him an awareness that so many athletes lack.

Also, thanks for making your retirement so classy Andy. I hate these long, idiotic retirement tours. I remember Navratilova taking forever to retire from singles, only to hang around endlessly in doubles and mixed doubles for years to come.

I think it will be only a matter of time before we see Andy in the broadcast booth, and that will bring pleasures of its own.

If I were Darren Cahill, I would be very worried right about now.
I agree.

I always had a soft sport for Andy
Loved his humour and wit. He seemed like he'd be a fun guy to hang out with.
He'll definitely be missed.

Default Andy Roddick to retire after the US Open
Bet you didn't think I'd be starting this thread, huh?

He'd had a great career, done a lot for American tennis and through his foundation, and was priceless in the interview room.

Will be a felt absence.

He deserved his own thread.

Hope he can win another round or two here.

I've always enjoyed Andy. His consistency near the top the game has been remarkable. I'll miss him.

My heart goes out to those of you that are diehard Andy fans. I'm sure I'll feel really down when the Swiss guy retires.

I'm having a hard time imagining the tour without him.

I wish I had someone to take his place as my favorite. I'll miss the gut-wrenching points when your guy/gal is ass-deep in a tiebreak for the match. I'll still enjoy the sport but I doubt it will ever be quite the same for me.

I'm glad he's retiring while he's still seed-worthy.

It must have been morbid curiosity that led me to look up how other countries are reporting the story, but I stopped after this subheadline from the London Times: "Former U.S. Open winner calls it quits after disappointments at Wimbledon."

Wow.... this is unexpected (at least for me). He seemed to be on a little upswing again. I'm really going to miss him on the tour. He has a very unique wit off the court and somehow fun rapidity when on serve on the court.

Never completely warmed up to him but he'll be missed.

I think this is the beginning of the end for a generation. The first generation of tennis I completely followed.

Roger pointed out that Andy is retiring with winning streak against him (1-0, after the victory in Miami) and said, "He got the last laugh."

It's going to be a while before another player lights up American stadiums like Roddick did. Even those who weren't fans will realize what he accomplished as the more time passes, and maybe there's no American fixture in the top 10 or always being considered a contender at Slams.

He'll be in the booth, for sure!

My heart goes out to his fans, though. So sudden.

Ok, I have an open spot in my roster. Now accepting applications for a player who needs another fan:
- preferably early 20's
- 1 or 2 big weapons but must have a weak shot for lots of heart-stopping UE's
- Intelligent, witty, snarky, lots of attitude but not an all-out dick (may disqualify Harrison here, not sure... Tomic out for sure)
- Passionate but pedantic, may get completely derailed arguing a call for the duration of a match (Raonic out?)
- Occasional racquet smash ok
- Future top-10 player, able to get a sniff at some majors, but will usually be the underdog

Submit applications in this thread, thanks!

Add (in 8 person league) to "future top-10 player" and (hot dog eating) before majors, and I am your man! I'll make some youtube clips of me playing and send you the link.

Woody uses couch surfing to pick up chicks. He knows monogamy isn't for him and has become quite adept at fulfilling his dirty little needs and desires.

Wow... very specific criteria there.

Soderling if he ever comes back? (too old?)

Dolgopolov? (probably will not make top 10?)

Does Kevin Anderson speak?

Nobody is going to have quite Roddick's style of personality.

Never completely warmed up to him but he'll be missed.

I think this is the beginning of the end for a generation. The first generation of tennis I completely followed.
I am on record saying he was stoic. I admired that from him.
First time I saw one of his matches. He was playing Sampras, who hit a really sharp volley that Andy ran down, could not get to, but his momentum carried him into the bleachers. He bent over the little fence there, and when he came up, he had grabbed somebody's Coke from the floor and took a sip from it.
It cracked me up. I though "this kid has it".

Third generation I have followed. Panache wise, he is up there with Connors. Talent wise, we know this is the least accomplished of the American generations.
I don't know if I will miss him. Some quotes, yes. Some boorish behavior on court, no.

Hope he retires with dignity and does not go into DWTS or any other stupid activity. He is certainly better than that.

Harrison's your best bet, but no Top 10 guarantee.
