Lopez has only played one match since retiring in the 1st round at the FO. Possibly a factor.

Nadal comes back from 2 breaks down to take the set on a tiebreaker. Same old same old. Bellucci's brain exploded in the tie break (not literally, though it may as well have).

Zahlavova Strycova has played a pretty entertaining match against Serena. She's tried all kinds of things, chips and charges, S&V. It's not quite enough, but good for her for trying.

How did Serena look, munchin?

I noted this comment from Courtney's preview at SI Serena has been noticeably subdued since her first-round exit in Paris, and understandably so. That was a shocker, probably more to her than even the public. So has she had the time to shake it out and focus on the tournament that best suits her weapons? She’s put in a lackluster effort in the practice sessions I’ve observed, her Twitter feed is decidedly depressing, and she didn’t seem all that excited about things at her pretournament news conference. I’m just not convinced Serena’s head or heart are in London right now, but this match could prove me wrong. http://tennis.si.com/2012/06/25/wimb...ch/#more-19961

Nah. 13 Grand Slams (4 Wimbledons) to 1 (0).

::

Welcome back, Mardy!
Sampras has played on court 2 on occasion too even though he was the most successful player at Wimbledon. I think sometimes they just give preference to rankings instead of overall success/status.

Naturally after I commented she appears to have woken up a bit. I just saw that she was down 4-1 and losing the first few points on her serve there still when I posted.

And to answer the question, I went ahead and looked since I was curious. I went through all of the open era women's Wimbledon winners, and there was one.... Graf in 1994 was the defending champ and lost in the first round.

For the Men's side, Hewitt actually lost as defending champ in the first round in 2003.

(Note, I was looking only at Wimbledon here)
Hingis lost in the first round a few years later but at that point she was not the defending champion. However, both Graf and Hingis were #1 seeds when they lost in the opening round and that was also some sort of record.

Serena actually looked kinda pumped. Her form wasn't her best, but she was pumping her fist after winners and screaming "Come on!" a lot. She's definitely engaged.

Dang, 61 winners for Fish, today, says an article on the official site! Hopefully, something else the article reports isn't symptomatic of something more serious than just "old man" aches:

Although the 30-year-old showed no outward sign of any physical ailments during the duel with his Spanish opponent, concern spread around the media room when the American failed to show up for a post match press conference.

According to an official, Fish had been “feeling unwell” since the match and had opted out of the customary media Q&A session.

Thanks I have been expecting her to be super-motivated to do well here.
