Sampras had already had treatment before that game, and after attempting to play another three points was forced to admit defeat. Ivanisevic was disappointed, despite the fact that he can now claim to have defeated his long-time nemesis for the first time since 1996! “12 years since I last played him, I started well, served well then he went for that one point at 3-2 and pulled a muscle. This guy has taken so many years off my life off me and then this happens!” the Croat said with deadpan humour. “Even if it was only a set though, it was a pleasure to see him after all this time.” Sampras was disappointed for the fans to have had to pull out after just 20 minutes of tennis. “At 4-2 the ball hit the net cord and I went for it in a funny way and I could tell that I’d done something wrong to my quad,” the 14-time Grand Slam champion said. “I know from experience that it’ll hurt tomorrow but I’ll rest, get some treatment and hopefully be ready for Friday’s match (when he is due to face Mark Philippoussis). I won’t be 100% but I’ll do my best.” |

Broady back to winning ways, Golding through to final
After losing his opening match to world junior no.1 Jiri Vesely late on Wednesday night, Liam Broady was back in action again on Thursday lunchtime and registered his first win, while compatriot Oliver Golding secured his place in Saturday's final. The Mancunian defeated local hero Alexander Ritschard in a hotly-disputed match that included two tie-breaks. Broady took the opener 6-4 after almost squandering a 5-1 lead, then battled back in the second from 5-1 down to force a tie-break and even carve out a match point at 6-5 in the breaker, only for Ritschard to serve big and take it 8-6. The match was then decided on a champions tie-break, and despite losing the opening point on service (which Ritschard then followed up with an ace), Broady kept his cool and hit some accurate lefty forehands into the corners to finish off the tie 10-5. All four players in the Adecco group now have a win and a loss to their name, meaning that the winners of Friday’s ties between Broady and Filip Horansky and Ritschard versus Vesely will qualify for Saturday, with the number of sets and perhaps even the number of games won throughout the group stages determining who makes the final and who goes into the third-place play-off. Oliver Golding made it two British wins in a row by defeating Croat lefty Mate Pavic in straight sets. With Dimitri Bretting's 6-0, 6-1 win over Joshua Sapwell, Londoner Golding was guaranteed a place in Saturday’s final, with Bretting overtaking Pavic in the standings to make it through to the third-place playoff. |

Re: The BNP Paribas Zurich Open - March 8
http://www.zurichopen.net/index.php?page=News&id=69 Henman and Lendl through to super Saturday Tim Henman became the first player through to Saturday’s finals day with his second consecutive straight-sets win, this time over Michael Stich 6-3, 6-4, and was soon followed by Ivan Lendl who defeated Henri Leconte in a champions' tie-break. In the BeFair Partners ag group, all four participants are still in with a shout. A win over Pete Sampras and Mark Philippoussis will be in his second consecutive ATP Champions Tour final after winning the tournament in Delray Beach in February. That result would also open the door for Thomas Muster to sneak into the third-place play-off by beating Goran Ivanisevic. All eyes will be on Sampras, who strained a left quad muscle against Ivanisevic on Wednesday and though he has promised to play, he is unlikely to be at 100% and will struggle against the youngest player in the tournament (Philippoussis being a spring chicken compared with the rest of the field at 34 years old). Should Pistol Pete defeat the Australian however then it will be time to get the calculators out, particular if Ivanisevic beats Muster. That would leave everyone except the Austrian on two wins and one defeat, and it will come down to the number of sets and perhaps even the number of games won and lost by each to separate them. |

Two in a row for impressive Philippoussis
Mark Philippoussis made it two wins out of two on the ATP Champions Tour this year, defeating Tim Henman 6-3, 7-6(3) in a high-quality BNP Paribas Zurich Open final. This was the Australian’s second tournament win of the year, following on from Delray Beach in February, putting him well clear at the top of the rankings. The match was the proverbial game of two halves. The opening set was a thunderstorm of Philippoussis service winners, the patented “Scud” missiles raining down on Henman at speeds around the 230 km/h mark. The Briton initially had no answer (like Pete Sampras, Goran Ivanisevic and Thomas Muster before him in the group stages), but he found his rhythm on service and return in the second set, without every really threatening to carve out a break. It went to a tie-break, but once the 1.96m, 93 kg Australian had opened with a mini-break and followed up with two booming services, the battle was over, and the 2,900 fans in the Saalsporthalle showed due appreciation for what had been a fine match. Prior to the final, the third-place play-off saw Goran Ivanisevic defeat Ivan Lendl 7-6(3), 6-3. The two players are a year off their forties but on different sides, and once the 39-year-old Croat had worn the 51-year-old American down in a first-set tie-break, the rest of the match was one-way traffic. Goran banged down the aces on first and second services, regularly topping 200 km/h, but Ivan never lost the smile which he had had all week here in Zurich. |
