ATP Champions Tour Field & Schedule Set For Delray Beach
Martin, Pernfors & Arias added to Florida's only ATP Champions Tour Event

DELRAY BEACH, FL: Todd Martin, Mikael Pernfors and Jimmy Arias have been added to the lineup for the ATP Champions Tour event at the 2011 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships (ITC) Feb. 18-27 at the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center.

The trio join Grand Slam champions John McEnroe, Mats Wilander and Pat Cash, two-time Grand Slam finalist Mark Philippoussis, and 1990 US Davis Cup champion Aaron Krickstein in rounding out the 8-man roster for the 2nd annual event. The ATP Champions Tour matches kick off 10 days of ATP action in Delray Beach that also includes the 19th annual ATP World Tour event.

The ATP Champions Tour event begins Friday, Feb. 18 at 7:00 pm with Martin meeting Arias, followed by a Philippoussis vs. Cash nightcap. McEnroe, the runner-up in the inaugural Delray Beach ATP Champions Tour event a year ago, opens against Arias at 9:00 pm on Saturday (Feb. 19). The ATP Champions Tour event is played in a round robin format, with both the final and 3rd & 4th playoff matches contested on Tuesday (Feb. 22).

A two-time Grand Slam runner-up and a member of the 1995 US Davis Cup champion team, Martin won his first ATP title in 1993 in the inaugural ITC that was held in Coral Springs. He was a finalist at the '94 Australian Open and the '99 US Open and also reached the semifinals in 1994 at Wimbledon and the US Open, and Wimbledon again in 1996.

Pernfors, the 1986 French Open finalist who now lives in Vero Beach, was on the winning Swedish Davis Cup team in 1987. He turned pro after a successful collegiate career where he won back-to-back NCAA singles titles in 1984 and 1985.

Arias, a member of the Tennis Channel broadcast team for the last decade, reached No. 6 in the world as a 19-year-old in 1983, when he reached the semifinals of the US Open. He also played on the US Davis Cup team between 1983 and 1987.

MONDAY Feb 21 Results

M Wilander (SWE) d M Pernfors (SWE) 57 62 (10-3)
A Krickstein (USA) d J Mcenroe (USA) 63 46 (10-3)

This last result fairly blows my mind - wish I knew how it happened. Did JMac not play well, did AK play out of his mind- UFEs? DF? What was going on, does anybody know?

McEnroe Edged Out By Krickstein In Delray Beach Classic

John McEnroe threw the kitchen sink at fellow American Aaron Krickstein but it still wasn't enough to reach the Delray Beach final. Krickstein triumphed 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 in a winner-takes-all round-robin match, and will now meet Mark Philippoussis in Tuesday's final.

McEnroe won all five of his encounters with Krickstein on the ATP World Tour, but his opponent's consistent ground-strokes on the high-bouncing Delray Beach courts proved too much.

Krickstein, who will forever be remembered for the classic match he played against Jimmy Connors in the 1991 US Open, ran away with the first set. McEnroe seized the momentum in the second, and appeared the more likely to win, but Krickstein turned it around to race away with the Champions Tie-Break, winning it 10-3.

Philippoussis Wins First ATP Champions Tour Title

Mark Philippoussis won his first title on the ATP Champions Tour after brushing aside the challenge of Aaron Krickstein 6-3, 6-2 in the Delray Beach final. Krickstein, who defeated John McEnroe in their last round-robin match to reach the final, had no answer to the raw power of the Australian.

Philippoussis won 21 of 23 points on his first serve to show why he earned the nickname 'Scud' early on in his career.

“Everything came together for me tonight,” said Philippoussis. "I’m really happy to pick up my first ATP Champions Tour title. More than anything I’m happy with the way I played this week in Delray though. I played my own game, I played aggressive tennis and that’s what I wanted to do so it’s great that I’ve won this title playing that way.

“I didn’t underestimate Aaron coming in to this match,” he continued. “ I saw how well he played against McEnroe last night and I know what great shape he’s in so I knew he wouldn’t be missing much out there. I have so much respect for the guy on and off the court and I really enjoyed the match against him today.”

Philippoussis also explained how important it has been for him to be able to play on the ATP Champions Tour.

“This is Tour has been so special for me because it’s restored my love for tennis,” he said. “I have been training so much the last few months and really loving the sport again. The Tour is perfect for me because it allows me to stay in shape and keep hitting the ball the way I want to hit it and also stay competitive.”

The BNP Paribas Zurich Open
City:Zurich, Switzerland
Dates:March 8-12, 2011
Venue:Saalsporthalle, Zurich
Director:Catrin Moehwald Hufnagel
Surface:Rebound Ace (Indoor)
Website:www.zurichopen.net

Though not officially the country’s political capital, Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city by both size and population, and is often known as the cultural capital of Switzerland. Situated in the German speaking region of the country only 30km North of the Alps, Zurich is surrounded on all sides by wooded hills. The geographic and historic center of the city is the Lindenhof, a small natural hill on the west bank of the River Limmat, which runs through the heart of the city.

As the commercial centre of Switzerland, Zürich is a leading global financial centre and famously home to the headquarters of banks such as Credit Suisse and UBS. Zürich is also one of the world's largest centers for offshore banking, and home to The Swiss Stock Exchange.

Located in the third district or ‘canton’ of the city known as Wiedikon, the Zurich Saalsporthalle is one of Zurich’s premier sporting and leisure venues, regularly hosting major sporting championships as well as theatre productions and major concerts.

The city of Zurich was also co-host of the Euro 2008 football championships, with several important matches being played in the city’s Letzigrund Stadion, home of FC Zurich, the city’s premier football club.

Philippoussis Replaces Injured Edberg In Zurich

Defending champion Stefan Edberg has been forced to withdraw from the BNP Paribas Zurich Open today because of hip and groin injuries. His place in the eight-man field has been taken by the current No.1 player in the South African Airways Rankings, Mark Philippoussis.

Edberg, who beat Goran Ivanisevic in the final last year, gave himself as long as possible to be fit, but was forced to admit defeat.

‘I am very sorry that I can't play in the BNP Paribas Zurich Open next week," said Edberg. "I love playing there and I had a fantastic week last year. It was a very difficult decision to take but health must come before tennis so that I can continue playing in the future.

Where Champions Meet Talent

Philippoussis, who won the first ATP Champions Tour event of the year last week in Delray Beach, will try to make it two-in-a-row when he arrives in Switzerland. The Australian will have his work cut out with Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Ivanisevic, Tim Henman, Thomas Muster, Michael Stich and Henri Leconte making up the opposition.

The champions will be joined once again by eight of the world’s top junior players as part of the event’s unique ‘Where Champions Meet Talents’ format.

Headlining the junior field will be the promising British duo of Oliver Golding and Liam Broady as well as ITF No. 1 and 2 Ranked players Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic and Dominik Thiem of Austria. Alongside them will be Swiss players Dmitri Bretting and Alexander Ritschard, Croatian player Mate Pavic and Sloviakian Filip Horansky.

Once again, The ATP Champions Tour event will follow the usual format, with the eight-man junior tournament being played in parallel. In addition, during the night session on each day of the event, tennis’ past and future champions will unite to play side-by-side in a separate doubles tournament where teams formed of one legend and one junior will do battle against one another.

Seguros Bolivar Tennis Champions
City:Bogota, Colombia
Dates:19-22 May, 2011

Venue:Palacio de los Deportes
Director:Jhan Fontalvo
Surface:Indoor Hard Court
Website:www.tennissegurosbolivar.com

The maiden Seguros Bolivar Tennis Champions event in 2010 was the Tour’s first visit to Colombia, and only the second event staged in South America. The Pueblo Viejo Country Club where the tournament was held lies in centre of Bogota, and the Club’s 5000 seater stadium had already hosted some of the world’s top tennis players at the ATP Challenger event that is staged there each February.

Moya To Make Champions Tour Debut In Bogota

Former World Number One Carlos Moya will launch his ATP Champions Tour career at the second annual Seguros Bolivar Tennis Champions in Bogota, Colombia next month (May 19-22).

The 34 year-old, who only retired from the ATP World Tour in November of last year, revealed on his Twitter feed yesterday that it was the lure of competition which had prompted his decision to join the ATP Champions Tour, and the clay courts of Bogota’s Palacio de los Deportes are the perfect place for him to make his much-anticipated debut.

During his 15 years on the ATP World Tour, Moya reached three of the greatest heights in the sport, winning a Grand Slam singles title at Roland Garros in 1998, reaching the World Number One position the following year, and helping Spain to win a Davis Cup title in 2004.
