BOSTON, (Oct. 1, 2011) – Andre Agassi squared off against one of his longest rivals and found enough of his game to beat Jim Courier 8-5, in the championship match of the Staples Champions Cup at the TD Garden. It was his first victory of the 2011 Champions Series. “Beating Jim is never easy, and it never has been,” said Agassi, who moved into a tie for second with Courier and Michael Chang in the official 2011 Champions Series rankings. “I got off to a good start tonight, and that was the difference. Jim and I have been competing against one another our whole lives, so it was our pleasure to be here in front of these fans tonight. Winning is a nice surprise.” One of the night’s more memorable moments occurred midway through the eight game pro-set final, when Courier handed his racket to ballboy Jimmy Ye. The 16-year-old had no fear, as he stepped up to face a serve from Agassi and drilled a forehand winner past the champ, as the crowd roared. “That may have been the loudest ovation of the evening, and it was certainly something that young man will never forget,” said Courier. Agassi advanced to the final with a 7-5 triumph over the legendary Ivan Lendl, who was making his first Series appearance of the year. Courier exacted some revenge on Michael Chang in the first semifinal, when he defeated him 6-3. Chang had won both of this year’s previous Champions Series meetings with Courier. |

NEW LOOK CHAMPIONS SERIES TENNIS CIRCUIT TO FEATURE EXPANDED MARKETS IN CONDENSED FALL SEASON
NEW YORK, January 4 -- InsideOut Sports + Entertainment today announced an expanded and re-formatted Champions Series tennis circuit starting in 2011 with one-night events in 12 North American markets played this fall. Each new Champions Series event will feature a field of four major champions competing in a one-night shootout tournament with two semifinal matches followed immediately by a championship match. Players will compete for ranking points and a prize money bonus pool for the top three finishers on the circuit. Information on venues, dates, player fields, sponsors, ticket information and television airings will be announced in the coming months. The Champions Series is a New York-based tennis circuit for champion tennis players over the age of 30 run by InsideOut Sports & Entertainment, co-owned and operated by former SFX executive Jon Venison and former world No. 1 Jim Courier. “The new version of the Champions Series will be more impactful with one-night powerhouse events allowing a wider audience to experience this special brand of tennis,” said Venison. "Players will be able to play in two or three markets over one weekend in the same amount of time they would spend in one city with the prior multi-day tournament format of the circuit. Additionally, with the condensed fall schedule, fans will be able to more easily follow the season from start to finish." Since its debut in 2005, the Champions Series has held 32 tournaments around the world featuring players such as Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg, Bjorn Borg, Marat Safin, Michael Chang, Patrick Rafter and Courier. "The Champions Series is the perfect way for me to stay involved in the sport that has given me so much," said Agassi. "Competing against my peers in this new format is going to be exciting and an ideal way to connect with the tennis fans who have long supported me and the sport all across North America." "With this new one-night tournament schedule fans will be certain to see four immensely popular players playing in every one of these events," said Courier. "When you put this level of champions together in these type of tournaments with money and ranking points on the line, you know you're going to see some fireworks." In addition to the newly re-formatted Champions Series circuit, InsideOut Sports + Entertainment will also continue to run International Champions Series events. I will add new information as it becomes available. Website: http://www.championsseriestennis.com...php?newsid=753 |

Sampras gets by Courier to win 2011 Champions Series Opener
September 23, 2011 @ 3:25 AM FT. LAUDERDALE, (September 22, 2011) – Pete Sampras defeated Jim Courier 8-6 in the finals Thursday night of the HSBC Tennis Cup to win the opening event of the 2011 Champions Series at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. The victory gives Sampras the early lead in pursuit of the #1 ranking on the Champions Series, with $1 million dollars of bonus pool money on the line for the top three finishers on the circuit at the end of the season. “It was really good to get back out there in a relaxed environment and play some of my old friends and competitors, and it seemed like we still have it,” said Sampras, the 14-time major champion. “As long as I didn’t get hurt and the fans had a good time, the winning was a bonus.” The eight-game pro set finals was tied at five before Sampras broke Courier’s serve, then held his own to get ahead 7-5, and earn the two-game cushion he needed. The two stars then traded the next two games, as Sampras closed out the victory on his own serve. Courier reached the finals with a 7-5 win over Jimmy Connors, who returned to competitive tennis for the first time in 11 years. Connors – who is just ten weeks removed from left knee surgery – led the game 4-2, before Courier rallied to win five of the last six games to take the set. “I’m very happy with the way I played, the tennis was there,” said Connors. “The crowd was terrific and I feel pretty good. I really enjoyed feeling those competitive juices again.” Sampras won his semifinal match 6-4 over Michael Chang. For the victory, Sampras earned 400 points in the official 2011 Tour rankings, while Courier gained 200. Chang and Connors each earned 100. |

Chang beats Sampras and Courier to win HSBC Tennis Cup in Washington D.C.
September 24, 2011 @ 4:03 AM Michael Chang defeated Jim Courier 8-3 in the finals of the HSBC Tennis Cup Friday night to win the second event of the 2011 Champions Series at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. “There was some really great tennis being played out there tonight,” said Chang, the 1989 French Open champion. “Jim was as tough as ever, but I was able to catch some breaks at the right time and win this one.” Chang relied on a solid service game all night and led the eight-game pro set final match 3-2 before breaking Courier’s serve. He went on to take four of the next five games to win the match, and the evening’s title. Courier reached the final with a 7-6 (4) triumph over Andre Agassi, who was making his first appearance on the 2011 Champions Series. The two former high school roommates will meet again Saturday night in Philadelphia, with this year marking the 20-year anniversary of their epic battle in the 1991 French Open final, in which Courier came from behind to capture his first major title in 5 sets. “It was great to be back here again in Washington, and I hope the fans saw an enjoyable evening of tennis,” said Agassi. Chang won his semifinal 6-4 over Pete Sampras, who had beaten Chang one night earlier in Florida by the exact same score |

Sampras Narrowly Beats Agassi to win Champions Shootout
September 25, 2011 @ 3:55 AM PHILADELPHIA, (Sept. 24, 2011) – Two American tennis legends renewed their rivalry in Philadelphia Saturday night as Pete Sampras hung on to beat Andre Agassi in the championship match of the Champions Shootout 8-7 (5), to win the third event of the 2011 Champions Series at the Wells Fargo Center. “Andre is the best returner I’ve ever played,” said Sampras. “He’s a friend and rival, and I have a lot of respect for his game, so it was nice to get the win tonight. I’ll be playing several more events in this Series, so I’m looking forward to more great battles with Andre.” Trailing 7-6 in the eight game pro-set finals, Sampras held his serve to force a tiebreaker, then never trailed during the tiebreaker. He went ahead 5-2 before Agassi battled back to even it at 5-5. Sampras then jumped back ahead, and closed out the match with a cross-court winner off an Agassi serve. “Pete always seems to put together his best shots at the end of matches,” said Agassi. “That’s the way he’s always been. But I liked the way I played tonight, and we had a great time here in Philadelphia with these sports fans. I really enjoyed coming here.” For the victory, Sampras earned 400 points and moved back atop the official 2011 Tour rankings with 900 points after three events. It was his second victory in the 2011 Champions Series, having also defeated Jim Courier Thursday night in Ft. Lauderdale. Agassi gained 200 points tonight and sits in fourth place with a total of 300 points. The top 3 finishers will share a one million dollar bonus pool at the end of the 2011 Champions Series. Agassi reached the final with a 6-3 victory over Jim Courier, who was in action for the third straight evening. The pair also met in Friday night’s semifinals in Washington D.C., with Courier coming out on top in that one. Sampras advanced with a 6-4 semifinal triumph over Jimmy Connors. The 59-year-old Connors was making his second Champions Series appearance in his return to competitive tennis after a 10-year absence and played sublime tennis to push Sampras to 6-4. Connors had the crowd eating out of his hand during the semifinal but the younger Sampras was too tough in the end. |
