I have listed here all players 20 or younger who will have a year end top 100 ranking for the first time.
Who do you think will have the most impact in the years to come? May be none of them? My vote goes to Agnieszka Radwanska, but I have to admit I haven't seen most of them... Olga Poutchkova 38 (198) Elena Vesnina 44 (106) Romina Oprandi 46 (187) Aravane Rezai 49 (196) Vania King 50 (164) Agnieszka Radwanska 57 (316) Vasilisa Bardina 74 (225) Alexandra Wozniak 91 (168) Victoria Azarenka 92 (152) Varvara Lepchenko 93 (132) Yung-Jan Chan 96 (223) Olga Savchuk 99 (172) |

I saw Azarenka beat Myskina at the USO, and was very impressed. While the result was not that much of a feat - Myskina was falling apart at the seams, Azarenka didn't miss a chance. She seemed unfazed by everything, looked etremely strong mentally. Her game was solid, although I can't really judge how good it is, because she wasn't really challenged in this match.

Wow, looking back over the past five years -- most of these young ladies tend to be rather streaky. They have a run of good results, then a stretch of a lot of nothing, before another spell of good stuff. Whether this is or is not related to injuries is open to question.
All of them are still on the scene, though most of them seem to be playing on the lower-level events. Then there's Vania -- whose singles results are as streaky as any, but who has done very nicely playing doubles - with, what, three Slam titles to her credit now? |

I thought it was really cool to look back at this to see how crazily different all of these careers ended up being after a relatively similar rise. Here's this year's as well for the sake of comparison:
Rebecca Marino: 60 (101) Heather Watson: 89 (176) Sloane Stephens: 92 (198) Just three as far as I can tell. Very surprising! |

Who's Vasilisa Bardina? I don't recall ever seeing that name. I just looked her up...looks like 2007 was "shining" year before she dropped off the tour due to injury. According to her Wikipedia page, she is currently being coached by Jeff Salzenstein and trying to make a return. I guess she played in the US Open Qualifier Wild Card tournament this year. |
