Hopman Cup - Wozniacki to make debut in mixed team event

World no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki will make her debut at the Hopman Cup for Denmark alongside countryman Frederik Nielsen from December 31, the tournament announced on Tuesday.

Wozniacki joins a list of former top players who have played the elite event: Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Serena Williams and Justine Henin plus Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl.

Other teams have also been finalised for the first event of the 2012 tennis season at the Burswood Dome.

Marion Bartoli and Richard Gasquet will play for France while three-time Hopman champion Spain will showcase Fernando Verdasco and Anabel Medina Garrigues. Bulgaria will be respresented by Tsvetana Pironkova and Grigor Dimitrov.

China will field women's French Open winner Li Na and partner Wu Di. Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will play with Tomas Berdych for the Czech Republic.

Host Australia will field Jarmila Gajdosova and Lleyton Hewitt, while the six-time champion US will see Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Mardy Fish play for them

What a blockbuster line up. This is always a highlight on the calendar for me, even if it is at the very beginning of the year.

7 teams announced - the 8th team is traditionally the winner of a "play-in"event between two Asian nations.

Verdasco and Medina Garrigues... That's way too much hot mess fun for one team!

Hopefully they will get to play doubles against Bartoli and Gasquet. Of course the real losers will be those of us who watch!

Think all 8 teams have been announced : Czech Republic, China, USA, Denmark, Bulgaria, France, Australia and Spain. Matter of fact, the groups have already been decided:

I think the term "hot mess" fits 3/4s of the participants.

RRS and The Maid as a team for some reason has me

My bad, Patrick. I miscounted.

Is this the first year they have not had a play-in event? I thought that was a tradition.

So many winner or utter flameout personalities depending on what day you catch them. The Czech team should be a great one in theory.

Serena's not even going to pretend that she's going to be there?

Although Sister B's perpetually injured, too. I hope they have Meghann Shaughnessy on standby.

Sister B is defending champ. Her and Isner won the title last year.

The first Asian Hopman Cup was played in 2006. I'm not sure how the 8th spot was handled before that.

I guess they got an Asian nation in.

It's too bad what would be epic - the men's match of a China-Denmark tie is unlikely to ever be played

This lineup is A-MAZ-ING. Dying to see Marion and Richard in the mixed.

Can we get through all this silly little year end championship stuff and hurry and play this exo, please?

I think they had a scheme going where two teams would play off for a final "qualifying" position. Thailand qualified and made the final one year and lost to South Africa. Also I think the Slovak team of Kucera and Habsudova qualified and won in '98. The losing play-off team would sub in forties when players had to withdraw.
