How can Date be in qualifying and the main draw?

How can Date be in qualifying and the main draw?

They're probably talking about some other 41 year old with a hyphenated last name.

I glanced at the official draw on the WTA site and D-K was the last accepted entry. She must have been the first alternate and gotten in from Sharapova's withdrawal. I imagine they'll pull her out of the Q draw and replace her with ALT pretty soon.

I think I'm right. The top three alternates according to the list in this thread were Brianti, Arvidsson, and D-K, and they're all in the main draw.

They're already playing qualies today so it must have been strange for Date to show up to play, only to be told, go back to the hotel.

Sharapova officially withdrew from the rest of the season on Facebook last night. Said she's hoping to be ready for Istanbul.

Medical reasons for Tokyo and Beijing.

The Beijing website was saying that she will be there on Friday but she tweeted on Thursday night " Closet cleaning day 2 of 4... Yikes! No space!!!" indicating that she was still in the US
