It would seem that it is very unfair to play the quarterfinals for the top half of the draw and allow them to play just two days in a row when the bottom half of the draw are looking at playing four days in a row - they should delay the men's quaters until Friday or decide on Monday final now - if they did that the ticket holders and television could adjust rather than trying to make the event fit the schedule and having a terrible Sunday final because the one finalist is exhausted.

They are complete *ssholes with the schedule and don't care. I am embarassed to have been a USTA member for so long and I hope they choke on their martinis tomorrow. But pigs will be pigs at the expense of good competition. At least I am glad that all the Americans are on the shit end of the stick because they get what they deserve from a marketing standpoint. They don't remotely care about a fair tournament and very clearly did not care when Juan Carlos was the loser. Now we can watch Djokovic or whomever from that half of the draw prance around with a half earned trophy.

Now we can watch Djokovic or whomever from that half of the draw prance around with a half earned trophy. We don't know what the weather will look like tomorrow or any other day this week. Or, what the schedule will look like after tomorrow should they even have the opprotunity to get through these matches. From what I understand, it looks like rain for large parts of the week. I imagine, just like today, if they can only do some matches, it will be from the bottom half of the men's draw and the rest will be scrubbed. Personally, I plan to hold off on saying whether or not the trophy is earned. All of the players are equally just trying to get through the next few days. And while complaining to them isn't a bad idea if you want to have some chance of effecting change, indicting them beforehand isn't particularly effective. You'll have the next 40 years to complain about the outcome. Try to enjoy whatever tennis is left. I'm not particularly optimistic about it, but maybe the USTA will find some way to not make you feel shamed for ever having been a member. |

now that rain has washed out two days of plan, the USTA has no good options left: 4 rounds to go and only 4 days to play them in. It is all very well to talk of building roofs, but those are expensive solutions. Some simple project management practices would have helped: the first rule of project management is - assume something will go wrong! and set aside buffers for them - all buffers should be at the END of the project timeline.
what the USTA should have done (in the first place) is keep thursday and friday free of the 'main events' like Men's and Women's singles, fill them up with doubles, juniors, veterans and whatnot - then they would have had some options.. now they don't. All life is a project! |

Well, this is just their schedule for right now. No one has had 2 days in a row rain out for 40 years, so they are still in the "doing what they know" mode. And ordinarily, keeping the tournament on track to end on schedule is what they do. I seem to recall a US Open, probably within the last ten years (maybe 2003, from other comments) that had oodles of rain, but is this really the first time that they've lost two consecutive days? Anyone have a good history of weather delays at the majors over the years? |

Rain has just been shooting up the coast for the past few days and just dumping over us.
The rainfall totals around here are pretty impressive. We've gotten more rain by quite a bit than with the hurricane. 10" just a bit south of here. My dog has been really complaining about it. He doesn't like wet grass and will try to ... ummm... stay on the porch to complete his required activities unless you berate him and send him whining/sobbing down the stairs into the yard. |

Anyone have a good history of weather delays at the majors over the years? That was the year that Ai and Skeevy Wonder took three days to play their fourth round match. They started on Monday, and after the fifth interuption of play, got delayed til Tuesday. Then they came out on Tuesday, played 2 games, and it started raining again. Finally on Wednesday, they were able to finish the match - and give Skeevy a couple hours rest before she played Capriati in the quarters that very same day (Capriati had completed her match on Monday, and so had 2 full days rest). As much screaming as is going on at the USTA's poor job of handling things this year, I don't believe it has yet reached the level of outcry it did in 2003. |
