Thanks Dry. It takes up to seven years to diagnose this disease. Important that she take care of herself.
I imagine it was a bit faster for someone like Venus. But yes, for the general population of people who receive abysmal health care in the U.S., I can imagine it taking several years. That used to be, and to some degree still is, the case with conditions like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which many health professionals continue to think is a "fake" disease because they can't see it on microscopes.

Two-time US Open champion Venus Williams announced her withdrawal from this year's tournament just before she was due to play her second round match against No. 22 Sabine Lisicki of Germany on Wednesday, August 31. Williams had missed much of the 2011 tennis season with a hip and abdominal injury and then was hit with a virus late in the summer. In a statement regarding her withdrawal, Williams said she has finally received a diagnosis for her illness.

“I’m really disappointed to have to withdraw from this year’s US Open. I have been recently diagnosed with Sjögren's Syndrome, an autoimmune disease which is an ongoing medical condition that affects my energy level and causes fatigue and joint pain. I enjoyed playing my first match here and wish I could continue but right now I am unable to. I am thankful I finally have a diagnosis and am now focused on getting better and returning to the court soon," she said.

This is a shock. Venus is my favorite player, male or female. I hope she will be able to lead a normal life, even if she can't play professional tennis. It is so hard to get a diagnosis of a harmful chronic condition at any age, but at 30? A shock.

Hopefully they have the diagnosis correct this time. It sounds like this could have been what was wrong all along instead of anemia.

SO very sad not to get to see V at the Open this year. It'll feel so weird for me for V not to be at the Open.

But, deeply happy to be her fan all of these years.
