Why's that, Omess? Highest seed, and only former champ playing Monday. The only other arguable headliner would be Fish, but I think Federer is the logical pick.

We have it mentioned in the SP thread, but thought it should be brought up in general discussion.

Usually, all 32 womens matches from a half of the draw play on 1st Monday (in this case, the bottom half). But if you look, you will see that only 27 womens' matches are scheduled for Monday.

The other 5 matches feature players who are in Dallas for the WTA event there. With all of the airports serving the New York market shut down due to Irene, there is some question about when they will be able to get to New York for their matches.

BW, thanks to our staff member Patrick for figuring this out when we first raised the point.

In case you are curious, the 5 matches that should play on Monday, but are not on the schedule are:

Yanina Wickmayer BEL (20) v Sorana Cirstea ROU
Lauren Davis USA v Angelique Kerber GER
Flavia Pennetta ITA (26) v Aravane Rezai FRA
Coco Vandeweghe USA v Alberta Brianti ITA
Alona Bondarenko UKR v Sabine Lisicki GER (22)

I thought Djokovic will play on Monday but maybe he requested a late start. Now Federer will play his second round match on Wednesday night.

Think Djokovic gets the Tuesday night slot with Nadal or Roddick on Wednesday.

I like that Petra Kvitova opens up Ashe for the US Open, whereas in Cincinnati she was never even put on one of the two biggest courts.

USTA just made a Facebbok posting that they are "working feverishly" to be ready for a tentative 11:00 a.m. start tomorrow (Monday), now that the worst of the storm has passed through.

The players have cars and busses to get them to BJK. Fans will need mass transit. MTA said that a minimum of 8 hours would be needed to restore service. They haven't started inspecting underground or elevated tracks yet.

The main problem is probably going to be staff, volunteers, ballkids, locally-based line officials getting there.

We've hardly had anything strong here in western Queens, so I bet the 7 train will be up and running early tomorrow morning. That's all we need to get to the US Open, though people in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and elsewhere will have other problems.
