Her ranking (currently 193) would be nowhere near high enough to get a direct entry.

Somewhere here yesterday, someone posted that you can use a protected ranking if you've been out for at least six months. She played a few tournaments in February/March, but otherwise was out from the US Open to this year's French Open. So she'll have to earn her way back into the bigger tournaments (not a big name or an American, so she won't get wild cards to help her back).

What's Serena's situation entering tournaments right now? Is she using her protected ranking to get in (only three times, right?), or is she getting WCs?

Hers is a case where having entry cut-off 6 weeks before the tourney helps. If I counted correctly, Serena's ranking pre/during Wimbledon was high enough to get her direct entry iinto events through the week of Toronto. But if she wanted to play Cincy or the week of New Haven/Dallas, she would need a wild card or to use her protected ranking--just like she had to for the US Open.

I don't remember the specifics off the top of my head, but there's a finite # of times a player can use a protected ranking (and the player had to be off the tour for a minimum amount of time to even qualify for the protected ranking deal).

You have to be out for at least 6 months. You can use the protect ranking 8 times but only for one Slam and it is valid for one year.

Serena has a top 10 exemption because she finished 2010 in the top 10. She can enter any WTA tournament (except the WTA Championship ) regardless of her ranking until the end of the year.

Unless I forgot (plausible), this is the first I've heard of that rule. It's moot, since her average schedule is 12 or 13 for a full year.

You mean you didn't think Bad Gastein was important!!!???

She is using that "Top 10 exemption " to play Cincinnati....My goal was more to complete Scotty 's answer. I know she will most likely not play after the US Open.

Wouldn't she still get in if she had ended the year 11th? If she gets eight "protected ranking" tournaments for being out with injury, the top ten thing would only come into play on tournament 9.

The advantage of the top 10 exemption is that she can use it for the rest of the year and save the 7" protect ranking" for next year.

Unless Spears win the next 5 games, Fujiwara will make the main draw and cause Dry to have a few drinks.
