Austria's Bammer retires after Wimbledon loss
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) Austrian tennis player Sybille Bammer has retired from the sport after losing to Monica Niculescu of Romania 6-1, 6-1 Monday in the first round at Wimbledon. The 31-year-old Bammer won two singles titles in her career and reached the quarterfinals at the 2008 U.S. Open for her best Grand Slam result. Her best showing at Wimbledon came in 2006 when she reached the third round. Bammer's coach, Juergen Waber, says, "Sybille Bammer played today her last match at an international tournament and she retired from professional tennis after a successful career." Bammer has a 9-year-old daughter. http://stats.cbc.ca/tennis/story.asp...f=hea&tm=&src= |

I can't find my favorite photo of her. Bunch of us watched her play Letisha at Indian Wells our first year there. Seemed like her whole game plan consisted of "Return ball, wait for opponent to miss". Wasn't the most scintillating match I ever saw. But when we met here on the practice courts at IW the following year, she could not have been nicer. Hope she enjoys her retirement. |

Disco Sybille? That photo is classic. 2-0 against Serena, only (recently active) player who can say that. |
