During the women's final today Johnny Mac said if Federer wins tomorrow he should retire, but that he probably wouldn't. I think Rafa said it perfectly in his pre-final presser. Q. Were you surprised to find out it's Roger again, and what do you think of his level after yesterday's match? RAFAEL NADAL: No surprise. You are more surprise than me, for sure. We know how good is Roger. Roger is having I think, in my opinion, a good season. He lost only against Novak in Australia, Dubai, Indian Wells, against me in Miami, against me Madrid. Always there in semifinals, finals, winning in Doha. So he's having a very good year, no? Impossible to be every week at your best. What Roger did in his career is something impossible to repeat for the rest of the players today, I think. So he's fantastic, and he's not surprise for me. He's very, very good player. Always is honor to play against him, and for sure is not surprise to see Roger in the final of another Grand Slam. Yeah, we all know he's washed up, but he's not so washed up that this run to the final was a huge miracle or something. |

I just don't understand the compelling need to bury people. In every sport, everyone loves the story of the washed up veteran coming back and winning something huge again (...only to knock them back down once they start losing again, but I digress. For an example, look at exhibit A: Williams, Venus-Wimbledon 2005) |

No pressure Roger, but this is perhaps the most important match of your career? He's just broken one of the greatest streaks ever. He is considered by most to be the GOAT. He is almost 30. He's playing in Rafa's house and even the most optimistic Fed fan doesn't fell confident. If he wins, he'll have beaten his arch rival on the surface he dominates and will complete the Double Career Grand Slam. I have never So badly wanted an athlete to win a match as I want Rog to win today. I will be on pins and needles. |

Hey didya know? According to McEnroe, Rafa has only ever lost one match on clay. I know, I know, anybody can misspeak. Of course he meant at the French. But this was in the first 5 minutes of the broadcast. Hope the accuracy goes up from here.
As for the match, I've got my fingers crossed. Can't quite get the last Sunday final beatdown out of my mind. Just hoping Rafa's lack of dominance this year and Roger's resurgence this tournament can provide some really good, evenly-matched tennis. |
