Austrian veteran Stefan Koubek announces end of tennis career
By The Associated Press VIENNA — Austrian tennis player Stefan Koubek, who was ranked a career-high No. 20 in 2000, has announced his retirement. Currently ranked No. 261, Koubek will end his career with an exhibition match on July 30. Koubek says "I wanted to play Roland Garros and Wimbledon one more time but I won't make it. Once you've decided to quit, you lose your motivation." Kitzbuehel tournament organizers say the 34-year-old Koubek turned down a wild card for their ATP tour event in August. Koubek won three ATP titles and has been part of Austria's Davis Cup team for 13 seasons. http://www.google.com/hostednews/can...?docId=6765357 |

What smokers remain now? (aside from Ferrer).
Koubek will forever live in infamy in my mind for being 1/2 of the worse match I ever sat through (against Blake at the US Open, 2007) - but he will also serve as a fond memory of one of the most memorable and storied evenings I ever spent with fellow TATeurs. |
