Default Franny Schiavone. What do think?
Talk about coming from nowhere, but where does she go from here?

I don't think I have ever seem a more ebullient champion. That says more than enough for me. If Francesca retired tomorrow, we are all still the better for having watched today's match.

LOL!

At 29, I can't think of a more ideal time to call it quits and end on the highest possible note. At least I would give it very serious thought.

She may never come close to repeating, but the way she conducted herself today... she's a veteran champion in her heart and mind.

Majoli...Myskina...Ivanovic...Schiavone.

But one slam is always better than none.

Yup, play out the year and come back for Fed Cup and Rome only. But she won't do it.

I really don't see the problem for her.

It would be different if she were younger (ahem, Ana) but at her age it's not like she'll have the same pressure to become the next #1 or win multiple slams.

As long as she ENJOYS the tour and enjoys playing, she should continue. If she's tired of playing, she can retire on the highest note possible. It just comes down to how much she loves it (and she really seems to).

Plenty And I also think this will be the highlight of her career, but so what, indeed... She won me over today (and made up for more than one SP exit by yours truly)

I can't choose from any of the options. I think there's a perfectly reasonable shot at another Slam Semi for Frannie, with as nuts as the women's game is. And, she's a very worthy Slam champions. (Albeit, I feel the same for Ana, Iva, and Myskina, too. IMO, you're the last one standing= you deserve to be a Slam champion.)

She's definitely worthy.

As far as another semi, it seemed highly unlikely to me, but I did forget that she'll be ranked #6. She'll probably stay in the top 8 for a year. That's 4 slams where she'll most likely be seeded to make the QF. There will probably be at least one time where she'll have to lose to a lower ranked player to not make the semis. I still think it's unlikely, but I'm not as sure now.

Anyone who wins a GS title is worthy, but I can't say that I don't feel that this was kind of a throwaway--a lot of squandered opportunities for any number of top players.

Ditto.

She definitely deserved it, though.

I can still see her making another semi at the French with the right draw, though.

She's definitely worthy and a win is a win but post tournament analysis as to how it all came about is also worthwhile. Franny beat everyone in her path but the draw also did her huger favors. First of all Kim did not play. Then the three main contenders all fell in the same half and had to fight through each other. It was a perfect storm for Franny and she seized the opportunity by playing impeccable tennis. As I posted earlier, Franny played perfect clay court tennis while Sam got stuck playing hard court tennis.

Well, not surprised to see this poll (I think she may make another SEMI myself, probably not a final)

But people are thinking she should retire just because she won? Holy out of left field...it's not like she was considering it before, why would she suddenly think of it now that she's had her greatest success?

Love the poll. LOL.

"Majoli...Myskina...Ivanovic...Schiavone."

Sounds like something you'd chant over a simmering pot of tongue of lizard and eye of newt.

BTW, thanks Moose. I had to look up 'ebullient'.

I say good for her. I hope she plays as long as she wants to.

I can only speak for myself, but I didn't mean she should retire because she won. I meant that if she were thinking about retiring sometime soon, she can now do it with the feeling like she's realized her dream
