Oh you're right! He should have hit that ball! I wonder if it was nerves that did him in, realizing that he was losing.

Can Federer get a break
He already has 2,452,168 of them... this year alone.

I'm not sure this single shot (or lack thereof ) warrants so much attention from the media. The guy missed the ball. It happens.

I don't understand the big deal.
The GOAT whiffed. That's gonna happen from time to time. But on a match point against his greatest rival...

Eh, it was just bad timing. If it happened in the middle of the first set at 15 all it wouldn't matter.

Exactly. Did anyone else notice that ALL the net cords in that match went Federer's way?

Just so no one gets the wrong idea...I really like Fed. I was just really really surprised that he whiffed on a ball right in the middle of the court. And IMO, that does NOT happen all the time, even on clay, even with lesser players, so it was pretty surprising. Anyway, I didn't want to be a Fed hater! I just thought that it was so weird.

So I re-watched the match tonight, and watching Rafa hit 100 gazillion shots into Roger's backhand motivated me to do some useless stats research.

Here is Rafa's record against all 18 of the one-handed backhand players currently in the top 50, along with Gasquet and Blake (cause, hey, shouldn't they be in the top 50)?

It comes out to an impressive 82% win-loss record, but also highlights that Federer still has the best record of any one-handed player against Rafa. It's just not an easy feat.

Federer 14-7
Youzhny 7-4
Gonzalez 7-3
Ljubicic 5-2
Stepanek 4-0
Almagro 6-0
Haas 4-0
Wawrinka 5-0
Robredo 6-0
Lopez 5-1
Montanes 2-0
Kohlschreiber 6-0
Karlovic 3-0
Hanescu 4-0
Garcia Lopez 2-0
Berrer 2-0
Llodra 0-0
Zeballos 0-0
Gasquet 7-0
Blake 4-3

It's rare that I'll say anything un-negative about Roger, I usually just keep my mouth shut, but...

I watched that video several times on TV and it sure looked to me like he got a bad bounce.

Or the ball had some really unusual spin on it and Fed completely misjudged the ball. We need a TAT poll on this matter, stat!

Even I haven't whiffed on match point, so you can say I'm better at not whiffing on match points than Federer.
