Default Fed's Whif on Match Point
HI all. When Roger whiffed on match point of the Madrileņa Open, I assumed that Rafa's ball hit a taped line. The announcers on Tennischannel said the same thing, and they didn't show a replay, at least not before I turned off the TV. But I just saw it again and it looks like the ball didn't bounce anywhere near a line. Did Rog whiff a forehand down the center of the court on match point?

I just watched the match and it looked like a swing and a miss to me. Very odd.

Does it make me a horrible Federer-fan that I am still laughing? a) I really think it's hilarious in a "best home videos"-kind of way and b)it is just so... fitting for most his matches against Nadal. *sigh*. I assume it's also the kind of match point that haunts you for a while...

I gave him the benefit of the doubt and said it was a bad bounce.

Folks- Look at the video again. The ball took a bad bounce- look how high it bounces past Federer. Just sayin'.

And not only that, it made Yahoo's headlines (!):

http://sports.yahoo.com/tennis/blog/...urn=ten,241312

The announcers speculated that the ball took a bad bounce on Federer, but I've watched the clip at least 20 times and don't see anything out of the ordinary on the bounce. It takes a little side hop, but that's what usually happens off a Nadal backhand. Federer just missed.

I know the streak will break one day, but this is probably my favorite record of his.

BTW omess, I had no idea you are a Federer- fan.

And now it is on AOL's homepage with the headline, "Embarrassing gaffe for tennis great".

Also, nelslus can protest all he wants, this is still an epic fail on Fed's part.

He was going to lose anyway. At least now the haters have more material than just another loss

It's not like Roger is the only multi-Slam winning top player that ever whiffed...remember this (@0.15 seconds)...

Oh that's right, she whiffed, but still nailed a return shot, even though she lost the point

I thought he missed because the ball was beyond his reach, so I was giving him credit for at least trying. But was the ball actually within his reach, and he missed it anyway? Well he was hurrying to where the ball was and he was stretched out reaching as far as he could, so maybe he was off balance and that's why he missed.

I think it's funny only because it happened on MP, and because it happened against Rafa, and frankly because it happened to Fed, who otherwise just makes everything look so easy with his incredible talent.

He totally could have hit it, IMO.

For those who haven't read my post in the Madrid thread, I posted the video here: http://www.talkabouttennis.com/forum...=16856&page=33

Here's the video:
