Default Mauresmo Announces Retirement
Mauresmo set to announce tennis future
December 2, 2009 - 11:59PM
AFP

Former Australian Open winner Amelie Mauresmo is expected to announce whether or not she will continue her tennis career at a scheduled press conference on Thursday.

Mauresmo announced in October she was skipping her final two tournaments of the season, and rumours have swirled since that she is considering hanging up her racquet for good.

The Frenchwoman got off to a good start early in the season, winning the Paris Indoor Open, but struggled to maintain her form.

The former world No.1, and two-time grand slam winner, was dumped out of the second round of the US Open by Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak in her last match.

She is currently ranked 21st in the WTA rankings

You don't call a press conference to announce that you're going to play when you are 21st in the world, imo.

I think we've seen the last of Amelie.

Ditto. She has accomplished more than what everyone thought she would after her mishaps early in her career. Good luck Amelie!

Career highlight, IMO, was when she won the Sony Ericsson Championships(d. Mary Pierce) in 2005 at Los Angeles followed by winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon(d. Justine Henin in both) after having the label for years as being the best player in the WTA to never won a Slam.

This is very sad. I was reading the article and my first thought was..."a lot of players would kill to be #21 in the world and have the money and ranking points and seedings that come with it"....

But the truth is....before her appy...Amelie was riding high. She never regained that top form after she came back. I don't know how she can be happy playing and never playing top ten tennis like she used to. On the other hand....look at players that didn't giveafig about rankings, seedings, or money...they stayed because they love the game and they love to play.

I wish this wasn't so. On the other hand...we still have Justine and Alicia Molik and Casey making their comebacks in 2010!

I saw this yesterday on wtaworld, our own Bea twittered it and it got attention. I've been holding out hope that this wouldn't be the r-word but I'm sure it is.

This is so sad if she is indeed retiring. Momo is all that remains of the players who were at the top when I started watching tennis (if you take out the sisters and the Belgians). I've always had a soft spot for her over the years and I remember cheering for her at the 2005 YEC to win that final, along with her two majors, especially Wimbledon.

I just hope she's happy with her life and with what she's achieved, but I'll miss just seeing her name in the draw.

I'll definitely miss her.

My favorite matches of hers were at Wimbledon. It brought out her best tennis. Even those semis she lost were something to behold.

A bunch of us saw her play at IW in 2008 against A-Bond, and it was one of the ugliest tennis matches I had ever seen live, almost reaching the point where we were ready to accept her retirement right there, on the spot. Then Scotty and I saw her play a gorgeous match later that year against Julie Coin at the USO.

We also sat courtside at IW this past March for her match against Na Li. I think all of us loved that match. And a ball from that match remains in our custody

Guess I should feel pretty fortunate - I've gotten to see her play a fair amount, and when her game was on, it was so beautiful to watch.

That match against Pierce at the YEC ranks among my all-time favorites. It was gorgeous stuff. And shtexas has it right; on grass, she was awesome to watch.

Agreed. She just looked right there. So glad I got to see her win at Wimbledon this year.

Ha! Stop being two-faced about it! Li gave you that ball because all of you were rooting for Li and not Momo.

If Momo does retire, I will partially hold every Tateur at that match responsible for bringing her career to an end that much sooner.

Thank god I wasn't there for that particular match, rooting for Li over Momo is blasphemous.

I've missed out on a lot. What mishaps?

I'll miss Momo/Sveta the most. It was an interesting team.

Nothing two faced...I didn't say anything about rooting for Amelie - I just said the match was beautiful to watch.

And Friend of TAT Na Li was especially kind in giving us the match ball. Fortunately, she will never have to endure the grief Nelslus gives Sveta every time he sees her!

And yet ... we take our aggressions out on AMG. For whatever reason, when TATeurs watch one of Anabel's matches in person, she can't seem to win.

There is a certain artistry to her strokes that I will miss the most. I am so glad i got to see her play at the 2005 YEC folks are mentioning as it was just beautiful to watch. I forget which commentator described her strokes as painterly, but that really captures the way she plays the game.

If you recall, Miles can't deal with that nonsense either, especially since this year at IW, it meant rooting for Grandma to take out jockstrap.

And now we not only have AMG's death glares to worry about, but we also have to deal with Carla The Enforcer, and the baseball bat she has squarely aimed at Danielle's kneecaps!
