That's a tough list to argue with. I preferred Nole/Rafa's match to Fed/Roddick, but I can't say it was a better match, especially since Fed/Roddick was a 5 set Slam final.

No Australian Open final? I thought that was pretty good.

I'm glad Dent/Navarro gets some recognition. It was one of the rare USO matches where I wished it didn't have to end in a 5th set tiebreak.

I'm still trying my best to convince myself that the number one match on this list never happened.

Yea, I'd argue that that match should be on the list, if not in the top three.

In terms of drama, the Federer-Nadal Madrid match should also make it. At that time, very, very few were expecting Roger to beat Rafa on clay in Spain.

I'm actually okay with this list. The inclusion of Dent/Navarro was important to me because those are the kind of matches I remember more than yet another fantastic meeting between the big guys. I'm still wowed by the memories of Roddick/El Anouyi in Australia. (Dont remember years. Sorry. I even have to stop and think through which years my sons were born. The poor grandkids don't have a chance of me knowing when they were born.)

I love this list. I'd be hard put to argue against it. But there are probably a couple of matches this year that deserve to be on the list but...even if they were, wouldn't necessairly top those listed.

My favorite was of course...number one (Sorry Roddick Fans!) Remember how long that thread went on at TAT?

Glad ATP recognized the number 4 match on the list.

But there has to be better matches than number 5 like the 5 set AO final or the 5 set USO final? Also, how about Federer 5 set win rallied from 2 sets to defeat Haas at the FO. Also, at the FO, Federer 5 set win over Del Potro.

On the ATP site though, there might be a little bias to promote their own events so their list isn't dominated by GS (ITF) events.

The match that Nadal was dead for, after the Rafa/Nole semi-final? That was a mere afterthought, coming on the heels of the greatest clay court match of the year.

I remember several posters on this board were predicting just that. As far as Roger and clay this year his matches with Haas and del Potro were far more important (and competitive too).

Plus I seem to recall it not being that competitive or compelling of a scoreline as all of the other matches cited here. I don't think it would have been in the top anything for the year.

I like the inclusion of the Dent match, though. That was a good one.

It's good to see the Wimbledon Final at no.1 It's still painfull for Andy fans but his effort was amazing & it certainly was some match between the two.
My personal best match of the year was the Wimbledon semi final & Andy R's brilliant play & unexpected win over Andy M

The Nadal v Verdasco match was a thriller & great match.

Ok, I'm going to voice the dissent opinion. The Navarro/Dent match was great, but there are always 3-4 amazing matches like that played on the back courts every event. The only reason it got recognition was because it was televised, so people would have remembered it. I feel like it's a token "average guys" match they had to pick, and it was just the more recent one to remember.

If we are going to pick a match based on suspense and heart, I'd have to instead go with the RG, Ouanna defeats Safin, 76(2) 76(4) 46 36 10-8. And I HATED that match.

So, who's going to nominate the WTA matches?

Haven't seen that many this year, Clijseters-Serena? Pennetta-Zvonareva?

Kleybanova-Dokic ought to be on WTA list. None of the GS finals qualify for sure...

Some others in no particular order:

Wozniacki def Azarenka (YEC)
Clijsters def Serena (USO SF)
Serena def Dementieva (W SF)

In terms of overall quality, import, and drama (real, not manufacture), nothing comes close on the WTA this year.

Serena/Elena at Wimbledon is easily womens' match of the year.

And while it wasn't gorgeous, there's a lot to be said for Kim/Venus's USO 4th rounder. There was some brilliant shot making in that match. And while part of the bizarre scoreline was simply how streaky these two ladies can be, part of the 6-0, 0-6 can be attributed to absolutely wonderful play by the lady which dominated each one of the first two sets. When they got to the third, they had pretty much both raised their level, and that third set was a beauty.
