On the other hand, there was speculation before that Serena's commitment to playing the Fed Cup final may be tied to her trying to make some amends with the USTA. While I really think this is about her injury and needing some rest, I can't help but wonder if perhaps there is some disciplinary action headed her way, she's knows it, and she's basically saying, "Well, screw it." And the injury isn't really part of the equation.

JUST speculation. But I can't help but wonder.
I can't imagine why it would take so long to figure out a "punishment." Unless, of course, lawyers are slinging threats back and forth.

Regardless, Serena's thigh is mummified and she can't run. What use would she be on clay, of all things?

At least the entire team is well-rested now.

And I think she intended to, regardless of popular opinion.
I agree, JJ

After what I saw today, it makes perfect sense. Serena needs rest.

I am more inclined to think that it's the injury. And if it's not. SO WHAT?! People seem to forget that the athlete are human and their bodies can break down. Plus lots felt she did not deserve to be there, so I don't get the "I should have known" rants. And I don't mean on this forum

That's exactly what Lindsay said the other day. But then, she went on to say she thought the sisters should have been disqualified from the doubles final, so...

If they were going to do something, they should have done it immediately after the Open. But from I've read, there are still some discussions underway, but it's being kept pretty hush hush.

It's ludicrous. And I'd say that no matter who did what Serena did.

Anyway, I can't wait to see how the doubles play out. I think Spain is going to win.

I agree, but I think Serena should not have committed so firmly if there was a chance she was going to have to pull out. The injury has sort of been there for a while, so she must have known there was a chance.

The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is that the ITF wants to dole out the decision/punishment in the off season so as not to interfere with the rest of Serena's season on the WTA tour-- which of curse is not part of the ITF, unlike the Slams.

Imagine the media circus in Doha if it were already announced that she would not be allowed to play the AO.

Shocking.

So, anyone else thinks Serena was never going to play and this was just a ticket-selling ploy? Do the proceeds go to ITF or the Italian Federation?
My first "take" when reading that she wanted to play was, WANTED TO and that she did not intend to play, but possibly to show up and support from the bench.

GO VANIA - MELANIE - ALEXA and LIEZEL !!!!

Vania King was the Most Valuable Player of the World Team Tennis season this year -- and with good reason. She did a whole lot toward getting the Springfield Lasers to the top of the standings.

Again I say, GO VANIA !!!

Excellent points.
