Founded in 2005, the Outback Champions Series features some of the biggest names in tennis over the last 25 years, including Pete Sampras, McEnroe, Courier and others. To be eligible to compete on the Outback Champions Series, players must have reached at least a major singles final, been ranked in the top five in the world or played singles on a championship Davis Cup team.

The Outback Championship Series features eight events on its 2008 schedule, with its next event being the International Tennis Hall of Fame Champions Cup in Newport, R.I., August 13-17. Each event features an eight-man round-robin match format with the winner of each four-player division meeting in the title match while second place finishers in each division meet in the third-place match. Each event features $150,000 in prize money with an undefeated winner taking home $54,000 as well as Outback Champions Series points that will determine the year-end No. 1 on the Stanford Champions Rankings. Beginning in 2008, the year-end champion will receive a $100,000 bonus courtesy of Stanford Financial Group, the official rankings sponsor of the Outback Champions Series. Through the first three events in 2008, McEnroe and Courier are tied for the No. 1 position with 1600 points each. Courier, Cash And Larsson Post Opening Wins In Newport
8.13.08 InsideOut Sports & Entertainment
McEnroe To Face Washington Thursday In Outback Champions Series Play

NEWPORT, R.I., August 13 - Jim Courier, Pat Cash and Magnus Larsson all posted victories Wednesday on the opening day of play of the $150,000 Hall of Fame Champions Cup, the fourth of eight events on the 2008 Outback Champions Series, the global tennis circuit for champion tennis players over the age of 30. Playing on the historic grass courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino – the site of the first U.S. Championships (the modern day US Open) in 1881 - Courier, a resident of New York, N.Y., defeated Mikael Pernfors of Sweden 7-6 (1), 6-4 while Pat Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion from Australia, defeated Karel Novacek of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-1. In the opening match of the day, Larsson, from Sweden, upset Wayne Ferreira of South Africa 6-2, 6-2.

Cash, playing in his first Outback Champions Series event of the year, easily defeated Novacek, primarily a clay court specialist playing in his first career Outback Champions Series tournament. Novacek had trouble on the grass surface - one that he is admittedly unfamiliar with – as he struggled throughout the match against Cash’s strong serve and volley play.

“I think Karel had trouble returning serve,” said Cash. “It takes a while to get used to a grass court surface. Later in the week, he will play better. I think we all will play a bit better”

Said Novacek, “Patrick’s (grass court) experience really got me today. I don’t play much on grass. The last time was a decade ago.”

Courier is currently the top player on the Outback Champions Series – tied for the No. 1 ranking on the Stanford Champions Rankings with fellow American John McEnroe with 1700 ranking points entering the Newport event. Against Pernfors, Courier broke his Swedish opponent at 5-5 in the first set, but was unable to immediately close out the set, serving two double-faults to have his serve broken, sending the first set into a tie-breaker. Courier then dominated the tie-breaker – winning seven of eight points – and held onto the win the second set after overcoming an early service-break deficit. Courier’s win gave him 100 Stanford Champions Rankings points, giving a 100-point temporary lead over McEnroe, who makes his tournament debut Thursday against Mal Washington.

“I take the lead (in the series) for the day,” joked Courier after the match of his lead over McEnroe in the points standings. “It’s fun. We are all competitive people. I played well right out of the box today. We have five more tournaments to play, and I just want to keep the momentum going.”

Larsson and Ferreira both displayed classic, old school serve-and-volley grass court play in their opening round-robin match. Larsson broke Ferreira’s serve in the sixth game of the match and used his big serve to knock off easy volleys and dominate the No. 3-ranked Ferreira.

“It’s good to get the first break, to get some momentum going,” said Larsson. “I was lucky to get away and win.”

McENROE DEFAULTED IN OPENING MATCH AT HALL OF FAME CHAMPIONS CUP

Multiple Audible Obscenities, Unsportsmanlike Conduct and Abuse of Official Rulings Lead To Default

NEWPORT, R.I., August 14 - John McEnroe was defaulted in his opening round-robin match at the $150,000 Hall of Fame Champions Cup Thursday at the International Tennis Hall of Fame due to audible, unsportsmanlike conduct and abuse of official code violations in his match with fellow American MaliVai Washington. The default marked the first time McEnroe was defaulted from a match on the Outback Champions Series, the international tennis circuit for champion tennis players over the age of 30.

The series of events that lead to McEnroe's dismissal came after McEnroe won the first set 6-3 and with Washington serving at 4-2, ad-in, in the second set in the opening round-robin match for both players. Arguing a line-call, McEnroe was issued a code violation warning for an audible obscenity by chair umpire Ray Brodeur. McEnroe continued his tirade against Brodeur and was issued consecutive abuse of official code violations. According to the Outback Champions Series Code of Conduct, match defaults are a four-step process, with the first violation resulting in a warning. The second violation results in a point penalty, a third violation - a game penalty and a fourth violation - a match default. McEnroe's three violations gave Washington the second set 6-2 (the point penalty giving Washington the game for a 5-2 lead and the game penalty giving him the set by a 6-2 margin.) As McEnroe continued his tirade, fans at the Newport Casino became vocal and restless and began to yell at McEnroe to continue playing. McEnroe responded to the fans with a visible obscene gesture which resulted in a fourth code violation from Brodeur and McEnroe's immediate default from the match.

Jon Venison, the Outback Champions Series co-founder and supervisor, was summoned to the court and confirmed the code violations and the default.

McEnroe did not meet with press following the incidents but will continue to compete in the eight-player round-robin format event. He is next scheduled to play Karel Novacek on Friday.

"All players must abide by the same rules," said Venison. "Umpires tend to be intimated by John which generally means they are more lenient with him. He crossed the line today. We are dealing with a group of extremely competitive guys, and John is one of them. He agreed to the first three code violations, but disagreed with the fourth (for an obscene gesture). John said that he did not do it, and the umpire said he 100 percent categorically saw it. We have to go with the umpire's ruling."

Said Washington following the match, "I guess 1992 in New Haven was the last time I played John. Has anything changed? I guess he has one of those explosive personalities, you could say. There are a lot of things I can deal with, disputed line calls, stoppage in play. I have an issue when my opponent starts berating people, fans, and umpires. I said something to the official. As players, we are in control of the match. Officials are in charge of the integrity of the game."

McEnroe's other high-profile default from a match came at the 1990 Australian Open when he was tossed out of a round-of-16 match with Sweden's Mikael Pernfors due to audible obscenities. Said McEnroe following his default loss to Pernfors in 1990, "I don't really have anyone to blame but myself. This is like a long story that culminates in me getting defaulted in a big tournament. I mean, I guess it was bound to happen. It's too bad. I don't feel good about it, but I can't say that I'm totally surprised."

Said Venison, "For the vast majority of players this is a non-issue. Historically there have been more issues with John's matches than the other guys but this was over the top. We tell them (the umpires) to set guidelines early in the match so that the players know their boundaries. If you don't, things can get ugly quickly."

In other matches on Thursday, Jim Courier defeated Magnus Larsson 6-7 (2), 6-2, 10-6 and Mikael Pernfors defeated Wayne Ferreira 6-3, 6-3.

The Hall of Fame Champions Cup features an eight-man round-robin match format with the winner of each four-player division meeting in the title match while second place finishers in each division meet in the third-place match. The event features $150,000 in prize money with an undefeated winner taking home $54,000 as well as Stanford Champions ranking points that will determine the year-end champion and the winner of a $100,000 bonus. Play continues at the International Tennis Hall of Fame Friday with the continuation of round-robin play. Tickets for the event can be purchased by calling 866-914-FAME or at www.tennisfame.com. Play begins at noon on all days of the tournament.

The 2008 Outback Champions Series kicked off March 12-16 in Naples, Fla., at The Oliver Group Champions Cup where Todd Martin defeated McEnroe in the final. Courier won the second event of the season at The Residences at The Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman Legends Championships April 16-20, defeating Ferreira in the final, while McEnroe won his first career Outback Champions Series event in Boston April 30- May 4, defeating Aaron Krickstein in the final. NEWPORT, R.I., August 17 – Pat Cash won the singles title at the $150,000 Hall of Fame Champions Cup Sunday defeating Jim Courier 6-3, 6-4 in the singles final, spoiling Courier’s 38th birthday. With the victory, Cash earned $54,000 and his first tournament victory on the Outback Champions Series, the global tennis circuit for champion tennis players age 30 and over.

Cash, the Australian appearing in his first Outback Champions Series event this year, also earned 800 ranking points to place him at No. 6 in the Stanford Champions Rankings. Courier earned 600 points to move into sole possession of the No. 1 ranking with 2200 points. Entering Newport, Courier was tied for the top spot with John McEnroe.

“It’s been a fantastic tour," said Cash of the Outback Champions Series. "I’ve been lucky to play a lot of tournaments. My favorite surface is here on grass. The Hall of Fame put on a fantastic event.”

Said Courier of Cash, “He’s clearly a deserving champion and a very worthy champion. He’s a Wimbledon champion after all.”

In Sunday’s third-place match, Magnus Larsson of Sweden defeated Mal Washington of the United States 6-4, 6-4.

From Outback Champions Series Media:

BORIS BECKER TO MAKE OUTBACK CHAMPIONS SERIES DEBUT IN DALLAS

Three-time Wimbledon Champion To Play In The Stanford Championships At SMU Oct. 22-26

Draw and Schedule Released - Krickstein and Arias Join Headliners Becker, Courier, Philippoussis and Kournikova

NEW YORK, N.Y., September 24, 2008 - InsideOut Sports & Entertainment today announced that three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker will make his debut on the Outback Champions Series tennis circuit at The Stanford Championships, to be played October 22-26 on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Texas. Becker will be competing in his first tournament in the United States since he played in the Lipton Championships in Key Biscayne, Fla., in 1999.

Becker will play fellow former No. 1 player in the world Jim Courier, defending Stanford Championships winner Wayne Ferreira and former French Open finalist Mikael Pernfors in group A of the round robin portion of the event. Mark Philippoussis, the Wimbledon finalist in 2003, and 1999 US Open finalist Todd Martin will be joined by Americans Aaron Krickstein and Jimmy Arias in group B. Anna Kournikova, the former top 10 star of the WTA Tour and former No. 1 doubles player in the world, will also compete in mixed doubles exhibition matches during the tournament.

Tickets for the event are available now and can be purchased by calling 877-332-TIXX (8499). Ticket prices start at $12. Full ticket and event information can be found at www.ChampionSeriesTennis.com.

“I am very excited to play on the Outback Champions Series in Dallas and again play tournament tennis in the United States,” said Becker. “I am looking forward to renewing some great rivalries, particularly with Jim Courier, and getting my competitive juices flowing again at The Stanford Championships.”

Becker, 40, burst on the scene as a 17-year-old at Wimbledon in 1985, where he beat Kevin Curren in the men’s singles final to become the event’s youngest men’s singles champion. Becker also won Wimbledon in 1986 and 1989, while he was a runner-up at the All England Club in 1988, 1990, 1991 and 1995. In all, Becker won six major singles titles, also winning two Australian Open titles in 1991 and 1996 and the 1989 U.S. Open. A Hall of Famer and the world’s No. 1 player for 12 weeks, Becker also guided his nation to victories in Davis Cup in 1988 and 1989 and, in 1992, he and countryman Michael Stich paired to win the Olympic gold medal in men’s doubles. He won 49 career tour singles titles, including the 1988 WCT Finals in Dallas.

“Boris is an icon,” said Courier. “I am thrilled to be able to play him in Dallas and know it will be a very tough test. He always forces me to up my intensity level to match his so I can't wait for Friday night.”

Founded in 2005, the Outback Champions Series features some of the biggest names in tennis over the last 25 years, including Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Courier and many others. To be eligible to compete on the Outback Champions Series, players must have reached at least a major singles final, been ranked in the top five in the world or played singles on a championship Davis Cup team.

The Outback Champions Series features eight events on its 2008 schedule, with each event featuring an eight-man round-robin match format. The winner of each four-player division meets in the title match while second place finishers in each division play in the third-place match. Each event features $150,000 in prize money with an undefeated winner taking home $54,000 as well as Champions Series ranking points that will determine the year-end Stanford Champions Rankings No. 1. Beginning in 2008, the year-end champion will receive a $100,000 bonus courtesy of Stanford Financial Group, the official rankings sponsor of the Outback Champions Series. Through the first four events in 2008, Courier holds the No. 1 ranking with 2200 points. McEnroe holds the No. 2 ranking with 1800 points while Ferreira is in third position with 1050 points.

The 2008 Outback Champions Series kicked off March 12-16 in Naples, Fla., at The Oliver Group Champions Cup where Martin defeated McEnroe in the final. Courier won the second event of the season at The Residences at The Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman Legends Championships April 16-20, defeating Ferreira in the final, while McEnroe won his first career Outback Champions Series even in Boston April 30- May 4, defeating Krickstein in the final. Pat Cash won his first Outback Champions Series title in Newport, R.I., in August, defeating Courier in the final.
