Dinara playing Portoroz over this actual tournament is, I hope we can all agree, ridiculous.

Not if she's using Portoroz as a tournament to work on specific aspects of her game (e.g., her serve) before heading to North America, where the competition will get a lot stiffer. Not saying that's the case, but it's possible.

Dinara is playing the following three weeks so Stanford was not an option. In fact she has never played there.

Is there anything sadder than Chakvetadze vs Kirilenko? Although, it was almost fun at Wimby in mixed doubles, but that's because their partners remembered how to play tennis

I would have given decent odds for MaKiri to get a Monday night match, if BOTW hadn't just released this:

Bank of the West Classic Announces Partial Playing Schedule
STANFORD, Calif. (www.BankOfTheWestClassic.com) - The 2009 Bank of the West Classic today announced a partial playing schedule for the opening round of this year's tournament which features perhaps the best player field in the 39-year history of the event.

Three-time Grand Slam Champion Maria Sharapova will play Monday, July 27 at 7 p.m. against 2008 Bank of the West Classic semifinalist Ai Sugiyama.

The day session on Tuesday, July 28 will feature No. 4 seed Jelena Jankovic taking the court against a tournament qualifier in the third match on Stadium Court. That match will be followed by No. 2 seed Venus Williams against Canadian wildcard entry Stephanie Dubois.

Tuesday's evening session will open with top-seed Serena Williams facing Chinese star Li Na at 7 p.m.

The remaining first round schedule will be announced on Sunday, July 26.

Tickets for the 2009 Bank of the West Classic can be purchased by calling the box office at 866-WTA-TIXS (866-982-8497) or by logging on to www.BankoftheWestClassic.com.

Single-session tickets for the tournament's opening round start at just $23.

...

The Bank of the West Classic, a premier Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event, is now in its 39th year and features a 32-player singles draw as well as a 16-team doubles draw. The event is owned and operated by IMG and serves as the opening women's event of the Olympus US Open Series.

The list of past champions of the event reads like a Who's Who of women's tennis including Lindsay Davenport, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters.

The Bank of the West Classic qualifying tournament will be held July 25-26 and is free to the public.

Partial Tournament Schedule:

Monday, July 27 - Evening Session
7:00 pm - Maria Sharapova vs. Ai Sugiyama

Tuesday, July 28 - Day Session (matches begin at 11 a.m.)
3rd on stadium - Jelena Jankovic vs. Qualifier

Nadia v. Bethanie! Serena/Na Li and Sharapova/Sugiyama should be fun. And Meghann's back.

My Zuzana Lilia Osterloh defeated Jill Craybas today 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. First round qualies but still a nice win for her.

Sometimes, I wish there was a governing body that had the authoirty to pull people off the Tour for awhile and get them some help for getting their life together. I think there is something wrong with Nicole, and losing in first round of qualies, and stuff like this, cant be helping her.

Back when Hantuchova was at her worst, it was the same deal. I don't think anyone doubted she was not well.Yet she was playing every week, and more often than not, playing poorly. Fortunately, she righted the ship, though I have no idea how.

Hantuchova was seriously depressed and quite anorexic. She got therapy. Thank God she is okay today. This is something that is very very hard to escape from. Even to this day.....she doesn't like to talk about it. I admire how she has tried to hold tightly to her privacy.
