*Venus is officially the Bryan Brothers of women's tennis. Great, great players although even the twins have the career Slam. That can never be taken away from them. But, coulda/shoulda been so much greater. Some spectacular wins. But, when push comes to shove- they just don't QUITE have the fire needed to be truly transcendent on, say, the Roger/Serena level.
*Of course, if some of those damned heifers had beaten Serena in the Slams when they had freakin' match points.....I coulda re-thought this Venus Not Quite Being Transcendent deal. Venus losing today means any, some and/or all of the following. Take your pick- and, LET'S ALL HAVE FUN WITH THIS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR : a. No way in HELL someone who is as great as Venus is on grass should have lost this way. I don't care what Serena did- she should at LEAST have won the flippin' first set. So.... b. Venus flat-out choked. c. Venus just did not care enough. d. Venus doesn't have the necessary fire. e. Venus wanted Serena to win more. f. That damned knee of hers is even worse than we had feared. Which means that: 1. She'll play the rest of the year, and just play crap. IF YA SEE V PLAYING A BONDARENKO IN THE US OPEN- GO WITH THE BONDARENKO!! 2. She'll get a knee operation. See ya at your 2nd round loss at the Aussie 2010, V! g. Congratulations, Stubbs and Stosur, Your 2009 Wimbledon Women's doubles champions. (Hint: Start out hitting everything at V.....) h. Conversely, V will play gloriously in the doubles final, just to truly rub her fans' noses in what COULDA been.... i. A TAT-ite has a twitchy-typing-finger right about now, wantin' to let me know that I'm being far too tough on V. I know. We V-Fans know. Doesn't help. j. Hell, even I didn't have the heart to post this in the "Sisters (etc.) are Washed Up" thread..... In the long-term- V's great wins (remember: she won the end of years last year- and NO V-nut thought that would ever happen....) will more than soothe me. And it is ridiculous that this one hurts me as much as it does. OH, well. I truly never will learn. It WILL be interesting to me to find out who my next victims stalkees favorite players will be. (Albeit, there have been numerous years- see: era, Steffi and Pete- when I didn't have huge favorites. Which IS even sadder for me.) |

Edit: Nelslus will read the following T post, "Stubbs/Stosur break on Serena's serve to go up 2-1. Serena not in it yet," and realize that he had not properly factored in that Serena might decide to suck in this, just so that we V-nut fans can have our noses' rubbed in with what COULDA been in yet an entirely different way- AND so that V walks away with nothing from 2009 Wimbledon. j. For me, I guess the upside is that I had time to mentally prepare for this. I was feeling pretty sure after the way things unfolded on Thursday that Serena had her teeth in the 2009 Wimbledon, while Venus didn't. Last year, Venus had to endure some very serious challenges from players that generally fall into the "scrub" category (Dementieva excluded, of course). She got pushed in just about every match. And for her, I think that's a good thing. If she could get pushed at Melbourne or Roland Garros without losing, both of those majors could be different stories for her.
So for the time being, I'm in the "ah phooey, this is just another match" mode. I felt strongly before Wimbledon that Venus wouldn't win it. But then I got my hopes up again when I saw the draw. She really couldn't have asked for a better draw. The only one that really bothered me was the prospect of Suarez Navarro, but it's hard for someone to beat Venus two times in a row, and most importantly, this was grass, not clay or a hardcourt. And like I said, I pretty much lost hope on Thursday, but got my hopes up again today when Serena was serving at 3-4, 15-40... And then Venus sent that forehand pass well long... And my heart couldn't have sunk any lower. But to answer your question, nelslus, I would vote for the "Serena wanted it more"... And that's still consistent with how I recount how things unfolded, because Venus never really had an opportunity in the first six rounds to be challenged re: how badly she wanted to win this... And by the time she realized it today, serving at 2-5 in the second, it was too late. |

It is funny, but amongst others, Chris used to talk about how she HATED not being tested by the time that she made a Slam final- which too often led to her being a bit flat in a final and then losing. I agree, it would have helped V a great deal if SOMEONE had made her fight.
Still- can't take anything away from Serena. Truth be told- I found out about the result first from going on the day's play thread. When I read the first posts about Serena's winning- sadly, I was relieved when I saw the score. I thought- WELL, at least it wasn't something like 1 & 2. P.S. Venus: Could you now actually REALLY show up for once at the US Open this year, please?!?! Just don't want to have to wait until 2010 Wimbledon (OR- ahem, the 2009 End of Years....) to get a little V-excited again. |

Jesus. This is one of the harshest things I've ever read on this site. It doesn't sound like it came from a fan at all. P.S. Jesus. Just stating opinions here. P.S.S. Jesus. If Venus being compared to the Bryans is the worst that will ever happen to V, she'll be doing OK. P.S.S.S. Now I don't know whether Jesus or glorious is my favorite word for the day..... |

Yeah she's made what...14 slam finals now and has 7 wins? I think she's done just fine. If not for Serena, she'd be racing with Fed for more slams Of course, I also get that their careers ain't exactly over yet. BUT- this Wimbledon win would have put V into yet another category- and REALLY gotten her up there on the list of greatest Wimbledon champs ever. Coulda left her, for example, with a shot at being up there with Steffi and Martina. At 29- the clock is ticking. And- it's just disappointing to me that she just couldn't scrap more with this match- the way that Serena has done (not always, of course) to get to her 11. It's like, I've already accepted that Serena's going to go down as the greater player compared to V. Just want V to have SOMETHING greater than her sister when they're done. Woulda been SO sweet if she coulda taken lil' Sis one more time. AH, well- what's done is done. |

I understand; I'm a fan too. I'm disappointed that she lost, but being realistic, she's not going to win every Wimbledon, or match against Serena. I just don't understand how the negativity helps. I apologize if I offended, but this kind of stuff brings me down--it just isn't how I deal with letdowns. But I digress. I just finished United 93. Now I'm watching Delores Claiborne. Next up? 3 Needles. I don't have Schindler's List on DVR. It's just how I deal. |

Please now understand that for me, it does me NO good to keep negativity inside. It has to come out, and be released. And, by now, I trust you all enough to be able to be this open. To the point that I, frankly, have to insist on this. Because I also truly do not feel that I am responsible for how others feel about what I post, unless I go after someone directly or on purpose. It's just, snip at me, and I'll snip right back is all. And, this was a direct snip. And/or a snipe, for that matter. Doesn't make either of us bad guys- I'm sure that I've done the same. Still, let me just add- don't EVEN think about going there re: questioning my V fan-hood. |

Nelslus hon, Serena wanted it more. She was not going to lose again like last year and beating Vika and then that battle with Dementieva helped her tremendously today.
Venus I think became a little complacent considering how great she was playing before the finals. Serena came with a will, game and desire. Venus never stood a chance even if she has served a little better. She should learn from experience you cannot give Serena and edge like she did at 2/2 and not expect her to take it. Not in a GS Final. Foxy |
